The only reason I bought my IRN originally is because it was in a cage for months at a pet store I visited and I could see he was miserable. He had a large cage and even though he wasn't tame I still let him out to fly around my front room. So no, he wasn't confined at all. He had lots of toys to play with and was allowed to fly.

Thing is, you can protest all you want but people will always have them as pets, some people buy dogs and keep them in cages all the time but I bet you haven't protesting on all dog threads? Not everyone who has a dog takes it for walks or gives it a good quality of life.

How big was his cage? You said he was a bit of a nightmare, what do you mean, he was screamy or bitey? What will you do with a new bird if/when you move out of your Mum's place?

Also, IRNs are great talkers but are generally considered to be more independant birds, even when tamed. TBH this is probably better in that respect than, say, a conure, which is more likely to be clingy and yell everytime you leave it's sight.

I have an IRN, as well as 2 greys and a Jardine and all have completely different characters and needs....I have also safehoused many other species and would urge you to do your research well. You will get great advise from Birdline (if you go down that route) as to what may or may not suit your lifestyle and circumstances.

Oh I didn't notice he was in YOrkshire either!

I added a few birds to the rehoming list yesterday that were in YOrkshire (or around that sort of area). I hope the OP takes the time to look as there are lots of birds needing a loving home.

I am open to a rescue bird, like I said..I originally didn't set out to get a parrot but I couldn't leave that poor bird where he was!

I am in Yorkshire so if there are any rescues near by for me to consider then I will! :)

If you think "people will always keep them as pets" think fur wearers. The world woke up to that cruelty, but those animals were at least dead, not held for years imprisoned in someone's pokey room.
As for anyone keeping a pet dog in a cage? Do you know of anyone doing that? No, I thought not.

I see no difference in keeping a Parrot, to a Zebra or Elephant being in a circus. They are wild beings and should remain so.

Yes I do actually know of people who keep their dogs in 'crates', so maybe you shouldn't make assumptions?

Slightly different as an elephant is bullhooked and electric shocked into performing tricks for 'amusement' and to line the pockets of cruel animal abusers.

I am not in the same category as them at all, I got a parrot as it was being confined to a small cage and I am now going to rehome a rescue parrot - hardly the same as keeping an animal for profit is it??

I just mean he hated human contact - was like that from day 1. I used to sit near his cage just talking to him but he never warmed to people, didn't mean I loved him any less, I just wanted to give him a cuddle! He never bit me though.

And as for moving out - I am only just moving back in and won't be leaving for a while!!!

Yeah but in a parrot's lifespan a while might not be that long :) What happened to the last one (do you know why he died)?

If you want a "cuddly" parrot a IRN might not be a great choice, though of course all birds are individuals. A cockatiel can talk fairly well and are consistantly affectionate without being bitey. With a parrot rescue I'd assume they'd ask you what you're looking for and tell you about the individual bird anyway.

I want one that doesn't have t spend its life in a cage and can be left to fly around my room when I am there!

When will you be there? ... Ive noticed you've mentioned it will in your room and away from the dog ... Do you work all day? Will it be alone all day in your room? It sounds like it would be shut away, but maybe ive got this all wrong?

If it is going to spend a lot of time alone, maybe you should consider getting a pair.
Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.

I just love IRN, they're gorgeous and I love listening to them but to be honest if there's a parrot near me that needs a home then I will consider it :)

I have sent an email to the parrot rescue :)

I got offered a job today and because of the nature of the job I will only be out for a couple of hours at a time and then back home etc so it won't be on its own for long periods, plus my parents will be there and will give it attention. :)
