I have a conure, he's still young so hasn't mimicked anything yet and isn't cuddly but will let you pet him and hang on your shoulder. He's clipped for various reasons.

I would love an African Grey one day, but... they need serious time/space/etc commitments. As do all parrots... wonder if OP will come back?

No parrot. No confined bird at all.
Yes, they're lovely, and I'm sure great companions. However, I feel a bird should fly free. Otherwise what are their wings for?
Oh I'm sure the replies will be that the birds were bred in captivity etc., but makes no difference to me. I wish the owning of caged birds would become a total no, no.
I wouldn't imprison a Blackbird or a Robin, so why a Parrot? Can you not think of a cat or dog? They have adopted us as much as we them.

The only reason I bought my IRN originally is because it was in a cage for months at a pet store I visited and I could see he was miserable. He had a large cage and even though he wasn't tame I still let him out to fly around my front room. So no, he wasn't confined at all. He had lots of toys to play with and was allowed to fly.

Thing is, you can protest all you want but people will always have them as pets, some people buy dogs and keep them in cages all the time but I bet you haven't protesting on all dog threads? Not everyone who has a dog takes it for walks or gives it a good quality of life.

I would love an African Grey or a Macaw but I simply cannot afford it. My IRN was a joy too watch, although he didn't like contact with humans I still liked hearing him twitter and talk (he said Hello and Alright) :)

At my mum's where I am moving to my new parrot will be allowed out of its cage even more as the dogs will be downstairs and it can have the run of my room.

I promise not to get on my soap box.....but...

PLEASE PLEASE do NOT line the pockets of breeders. There are far too many parrots needing rehoming already. I am a rehoming officer for BIRDLINE parrot rescue and yesterday I put another 11 parrots up for rehoming and we already had 40+ on the list. There are still 100's more to go on the list.

All the parrots that we rehome have spent time in an 'experienced' safehouse. Therefore you get some information about the parrot and it is not just pot luck or having to rely on what a breeder tells you (who are largely just interested in selling the bird for profit).

Please PM me if you want more info or visit www.parrot-rescue.org.uk

I am sure you can find a bird on our website that will fit your cicumstances.

    hi everyone

my indian ringneck died a few months ago and i was gutted :(

i am wanting another parrot but i am unsure whether to get another ringneck or a different parrot?

anyone have any suggestions as i would like to research :)

If you look at the parrots here ...

    http://www.parrot-rescue.org.uk/portalid/0/Parrots/BirdlineParrotRehoming/LookingforHomesCompanion/tabid/59/Default.aspx

You will find an adorable sounding little chap who goes by the name of Ed, and he is a Blue Throated Conure ... I don't know where you live, but this little guy is in Kent.

I do hope though, that you are not out at work all day as I really don't think that parrots should spend all day alone as they would get very depressed!
Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.

Thank you for pointing him in that direction:T

Ed is adorable and the smaller birds quite often get overlooked in favour of the larger birds but they often have such loveable characters.

Oh I didn't notice he was in YOrkshire either!

I added a few birds to the rehoming list yesterday that were in YOrkshire (or around that sort of area). I hope the OP takes the time to look as there are lots of birds needing a loving home.

If you think "people will always keep them as pets" think fur wearers. The world woke up to that cruelty, but those animals were at least dead, not held for years imprisoned in someone's pokey room.
As for anyone keeping a pet dog in a cage? Do you know of anyone doing that? No, I thought not.

I see no difference in keeping a Parrot, to a Zebra or Elephant being in a circus. They are wild beings and should remain so.
