Selling a car without tax...

  • Where are you based? If there's not a lot wrong with it I doubt it's worth scrapping, I'd even take something like that myself to be honest. Depending on the condition etc.

    I bought a car from eBay a couple of years ago that was SORN'd in the guy's garage but had a fairly new MOT. I test drove it around his neighbourhood parking area, then agreed the sale, arranged insurance and drove it home.

    The Police pulled me over en route for 'no insurance' because the database hadn't had time to update with my details - of course I had all the paperwork with me so explained the situation and they were very nice about it, more interested in the bargain price :wink:. Then they noticed the tax disc. I told them that it wasn't taxed on purchase and that, being a Sunday, I couldn't get the tax disc yet. They let me go with that, saying "The seller should have taxed it before he sold it to you". They clearly weren't that happy and could have made a different decision if the mood took them.

    Since then I am likely to massively prefer taxed vehicles over untaxed ones.

    So personally, I'd stick six months on it and advertise it for sale on the assumption that you will get a higher price for it to cover that outlay.

  • See what you're saying Badger_Lady but what if the car doesn't sell for a month or 2? Be easier to say they're willing to tax on completion of sale I think. I'll be asking potiental sellers to do this for me come the month end (would be prepared to negotiate the cost).

    True. I guess it's never taken me that long to sell :grin:

  • Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, didn't expect to but I've won this;

    Should be £500 with the mot. I only put a cheeky £450 bid in, didn't expect to win it! Going to get the checks done now. Not sure who with - will search these boards.
