Selling a car without tax...

The tax runs out today on our car which would like to sell. Should we SORN the car or not? We don't really want to tax it for another 6 months. The car is probably worth £500 or so? My husband thinks we should accept £200 off the scrap man! Any advice? Thanks in advance.

If your not going to tax it you don't have many options.0

Assuming you have a drive or something to keep it on, SORN it and advertise it without tax in the local freeads or on ebay or something for £500 and see what offers you get.Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0

Why not SORN it?
It costs nothing and can be done online.
The SORN can be overridden, by taxing the thing, by your buyer without any problem at all.
In fact, SORN isn't transferrable.0 -
Unless buying it for spares who's going to buy a car they can't test drive without risking getting done for no tax.0

I'd test drive it, then buy it, switch insurance, and buy the tax locally.
The last one I did, I won on ebay, took a chance, switched insurance first, then test drove it, paid, and nipped round to the local post office to buy the tax and drove it home.0 -
Out of interest what car is it? Having no tax shouldn't put people off, might knock you down a bit though (6 months knocked off the price?).0

Thanks for all the replies. It's a 1.8 Focus 1999.
We went to SORN it online last night, to discover my lazy husband hasn't even changed the address on the log book, so he can't SORN it online else the notification will go to our old address. He rang the DVLA this morning and they said send the log book back with the new address details, and include the SORN V890 form.
It might just be easier to scrap it after all!0
