Being an electrician, I have see what "so called competant people" have done to their electrics, I can under stand the change in the law, it is for the best. People who think they know it all....DON'T! and can end up killing someone or setting fire to so thing. Leave it to people who know what they are doing.....We didn't do Five years in college for nothing. It for safety reasons not money.
  • Many a time ive been in B&Q / Wilko's / Wickes picking items up for weekend work at relatives, when ive seen people picking up 1mm cable thinking its good for sockets. A quick 2min chat, explain what i do, and what they want then send them on there way with the right cable, and grommets for the back boxes.

You cant stop these people doing the work, but you can show them the way, tell them what they need and give them the B&Q electrical leaflets on ring mains.
  • to be honest, as far as i am concerned (and considering the new laws and regulations requiring competency), B&Q (and any other store for that matter) should be banned from selling materials to DIYers and non-trade customers.

And you are naive enough to think that professional equates to competent and non-professional equates to incompetent?
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
  • I have recently had my two bed terrace house fitted with new box and electrics and extra sockets. Cost was £2,800 and now got a certificate. I moved in the house seven years ago and have never been able to afford to get i done safely. My old box was a black one and well out of date. So glad I got it done until my electrician kicked off when he didn't tell me he was finishing the work on the friday and when I couldn't pay him cash cause he left it too late to tell me he had finished and so he threatened to cut me off, so his girlfriend lectured him on being polite to customers and after me crying my eyes out in panic, he accepted my online bank transfer to his account.
That has made me distrust self employed electricians. when a friend of his tested the wiring and I got my certificate he already knew that this electrician had kicked off at customers before.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I need to have partial rewiring done, a friend (who is a qualified electrician) and works for one of the big companies has offered to look at this for me. However, he is not Part P registered.
    Can anyone tell me whether
    a) it is legal for him to do, if anything went wrong will my insurance be affected?
    b) does he have to be part p registered to do this?
    c) could he do the electrical work and then could I get it tested independently to get a certificate - if so how much could I expect to pay for this?
    d) do I have to have a certificate by law?

Any advice on the above very welcome, I am very confused as to where I stand.

    Thank you.
  • a) it is legal for him to do, if anything went wrong will my insurance be affected?
This is a hard one to answer without further information about your friends position within the company etc. etc.
    b) does he have to be part p registered to do this?
As above, not easy to answer without more information. Basically, it needs to be notified to building control. There are a couple of ways to do this, some easier and cheaper than others, but I would not recommend trying to circumvent this requirement as it IS a LEGAL requirement.
Read through this thread and there is plenty of information that may help answer your questions. Also, go and talk to your local authority building control dept. as they will advise you of the various options available for notification.
    c) could he do the electrical work and then could I get it tested independently to get a certificate - if so how much could I expect to pay for this?
NO The certificate is required to be signed by the person responsible for the construction, design and inspection. If the guy doing the inspection did not do the wiring he cannot legally sgn for the design or construction. Also, once the wiring is done and plastered into the walls or hidden under the floors, he cannot identify the installation methods used or whether it complies with the current regulations.
    d) do I have to have a certificate by law?
BS7671:2008 requires all electrical work to be certificated. Not having such a certificate can lead to your house insurance being voided.
  • how do council tenants stand, re this? cant remember seeing anyone come round and poke about in the fusebox..
