What percentage of public sector workers voted to strike?

Meaningless. The cost should fall because some reforms have been implemented. That does not mean they've fallen sufficiently to be affordable.

For God's sake, what is the problem with suggesting YOU should pay more towards YOUR pension so the rest of us can pay more to our own? You're so deep down this crazy union stoked entitlement trip that you forget who it is who has to pick up the tab.

And as soon as anyone makes difficult points there's some diversionary diatribe about bankers and fat cats versus angelic nurses. Well banks make a MASSIVE net contribution to the economy - 11.2% of the total tax take, over £50B a year. "Fat Cats" as a rule is a code for the pension funds who invest in companies and pay the returns to private sector pensioners.

So really, enough of the class war rhetoric and bring it back to why someone else should pay for your comfortable retirement when they're struggling to fund their own.

Don't forget public sector workers also pay tax, so we're funding your !!!!!! state pension.:D

I see the government is delaying the implementation of the NEST pension scheme for companies below a certain size.

Why is there no outcry from any section of society?

We need a fairer pension system for all people

What about the people in the private sector that do civic minded jobs? Mrs Generali looked after children in private nurseries and homes for years. No pension, no perks, no sick pay beyond the legal minimum.

The women that nursed my Dad through the last 18 months of his life while dying of Alzheimer's. Private sector. Similar arrangement to Mrs Generali I would guess.

More money going to the public sector workers is taken directly from the pockets of those workers. These strikers want a bigger slice of a shrinking pie. In the end that has to stop otherwise there is nothing left to take.

There is plenty of pie for everyone. Unless 4% of the population decide to take 70% of it ,as currently happens.

My wife works in LG and she gets them, and so do most other LG officers across the UK. Some get free gym, lucky begars (that is at the county head office, wife is not covered for that one as she works in a different location).
is it paul1986 who gets discounted travel in his public sector accountancy job?
She as just taken out personal swimming membership at a corporate rate (vastly reduced) at a LG pool just becasue she works for the autority, for me to join the same pool it is nearly twice the price.
Police here have a subsidised bar in the police station.

    Myth.................Busted.

Hardly busted: Company Cars, Free Sky TV, All Fuel paid for including private use, Private Gym subsidised.
Just some of the perks in the private sector.

Hmm council gym vs private gym? Cheap travel v company car?

Generally "good" perks are available to few in either sector, people on average wages in the public sector might get a few minor extras, but I doubt anyone sees them as a deal breaker; but to the higher-ups, they almost always are better in the Private Sector.

And everyone at Sky gets £50 worth of package a month; How does that LA Gym discount work out?

I knew I should have picked this phrase for Bu!!!!!!!! Bingo.

Stateworkers net contibution to the tax pot is what exactly?

Oh yes its zero. State workers paying tax is a myth, you get your pay out of tax, the tax you pay back is just recylcing what you have already been given. State workers net tax contibution from their job to taxation is zero.

How funny, I know of 2000 at my wifes LG who are all entitled to what she gets or better. I know of no one in the private sector who gets any of the above.
I had one mate and he was a director of a BS and only got BUPA and a pension, in a similar public sector job (director) he would get the same or better as well as other perks.
The vast majority of the private sector get nothing at all. Not even a pension contribution.

OK who knows anyone who gets the above in the private sector who is not in the top 1% of jobs.

I'm not on a state pension. I'm on a company scheme, which is less generous than the one I'm funding through tax for a public sector that frankly is barely fit for purpose.

Let's talk about education standards shall we? If it cost nothing, who'd send their child private rather than risk the local comp? Who would turn down a free BUPA subscription given the chance?

The public sector performs poorly and demands excessive resources on the basis of an entitlement mentality. It doesn't even understand what a great deal it gets.

    Depends who you listen to.

The Hutton Report - which the Government is using.

The unions always quote the net figure as a percentage of estimated future GDP (gross payments to pensioners - contributions "paid" by existing employees).

The net cost is only falling because of the increasing number of public sector workers and changes to the contributions. And probably crazy GDP estimates as well I expect.

Erm, Public Sector numbers are not rising. You need to get your head out of the sand: 710,000 job cuts

The gross cost, which is of course the actual cost, because the employee contributions are nothing more than an accounting exercise, is steadily rising and will continue to do so.

Any evidence for this line or do you just make things up to suit your own pre-determined opinion?
