Here's a recipe for Lentil & Ham soup:
500g Red Lentils
100ml Ham Stock
1 Carrot
1 Onion
Cheap, easy to make and delicious.

Good for the vegeterians too
Thinly slice peeled potatoes, and onions and grate a pile of value cheese.
Layer the above alternately in a casserole dish or slow cooker, with pepper and a little salt in the layers.
Heat up stock left over from the chicken bones, and some milk. Pour over the potato mixture and bake on low until the top is browned and the potatoes have cooked and absorbed all the liquid.
If very skint serve on its own, or throw bacon bits on top 1/2 an hour before cooking has finished.:j0 -

Hi All
I make this all the time and have it normally with a jacket spud for lunch for hubby and I.
1 Large Chicken Frozen Value Piece(35pence)
Tablepoon Balti Patak Paste(15pence)
Tin Value Chopped Toms (12pence)
Tin Value Beans(12pence)
Tin Value Kidney Beans(13pence)
Handful Value Frozen Sweetcorn(8pence)
Handful Value Frozen Peas(5pence)
Defrost chicken and cook for about 30 mins
Strip all chicken of bone and put in saucepan, add curry paste so chicken turns colour of paste
Add tin of toms, beans and drain kidney beans and add.
The juice from beans and toms give a good thick sauce to the curry.
Add the frozen peas and sweetcorn and turn to simmer and leave for 5-10 mins.
The curry should be a good thick consistency and very colourful, the chicken would of also gone stringy so it goes alot further. Quite hot wth the balti paste, but you can get others (korma, vindaloo, tikka masalla etc), they are £1.40 a jar but do about 6-9 servings a jar, so very cheap and taste alot nicer than the jars of curry sauce...yukkkk :eek:
This curry above will do 5-6 very good portions, serve with rice or jacket spuds(my fav)I use it for lunch and it freezes lovely.
Cost for 5-6 portions £1.00 plus spuds or rice, so about 30pence a head!! So filling and very easy, of course you could cook up a massive batch and freeze the lot!! Suppose you could do a vegie option or put any other meat or fish in place of chicken.

Great, I've only just started buying value cheese, the full flavoured one in Tesco tastes fine but now thats put me right off. Another cheap meal is liver and onions. I got a liver once from the local butcher, dont know what animal it was from, probably a sheep, bigger than a dinner plate, 90p!
Add a couple of onions and some homemade bread on the side to mop your plate.

I make Sweet and Sour Liver and onions, fry the liver and the onions, add 1 tablespoon brown sugar and one tablespoon balsamic vinegar, carry on frying until sugar is dissolved, pour in one can chopped tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve with rice or pasta.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things
