Is it REALLY bad in the North?

Or do Northerners just moan more?

I'm a Northerner - got on my bike in the 1960's and came down South to better myself.

Today, the housing market is rampant, spending is bouyant, wage increases are healthy, things actually look good .... in the South.

Just seen a young couple in the North moaning that times are tough, as they watch the chancellor on their 55" Plasma TV! Because a big Tv and iPads are essentials ...... yeah, right!

I suspect that it isn't any worse in the North - it's just that those in the North have now had a taste of the Southern affluence and have grown used to such a lifestyle that they cannot afford.

Am I close?

I think the trouble is that you just can't get decent tripe or clogs any more so they're having their heads turned by such fripperies as consumer electronics and non-offal animal products.

It would be worrying to spoil this thread with some facts, but :-

    - the North West is recognised as one of the oldest industrial heartlands in the world
    - the North West is still the largest manufacturing centre in the UK
    - Graphene research, being pioneered in Manchester University, is one of the most exciting material topics around
    - bio sciences, 3D cad modelling, and virtualised testing are all alive and kicking in the North despite somewhat erratic capital funding at time
    - the Advanced Robotics Research Centre is also in Salford, but rumours that some of their products escaped in to neighbouring Old Trafford are greatly exaggerated ;)

It is grim, but not to a true cyclist like yourself Gen ?

Here in my village on the edge of the peak, a fantastic walk or bike ride is free and the scenery fab (when you can see it through the rain ;) ).

I've not done much/any cycling in The North due to a fear of being told 'I were right about that saddle' in a slightly patronizing way whilst being passed by delivery boys humming the New World Symphony (Google it if you think you don't know the piece).

Yorkshire apparently has a lot of excellent single track stuff to get muddy on and I've done loads of walking around Buxton/New Mills area which is some of my favorite countryside anywhere. I just haven't got round to doing much cycling in it yet. I will. I quite fancy riding South to North up the Penines.

Proper grim. Huge chips on shoulders over the productive south paying their way.

Having said that, as pointed out above, the productive areas make up for the filth and degredation of the rediculous level of benefits claimants.
