Should I pay nursery fee for strike day when nursery is closed?

The answer may well be in your contract.

It is quite possible that not all the staff are striking, but the nursery has to close to children because some of the staff are out and the child:adult ration is wrong. In which case, the non striking staff will be in work, probably doing preparation/reports/non contact work and the nursery will have a salary bill for them. So not idealogically that different to a Bank Holiday except for the lack of notice.

I can see why you would not want to pay, but whether you are obliged to will be a contractual issue not a moral one.

I work in a playgroup and we operate in a council community building but we are not run by the council. Our building is closed tomorrow so therefore we are unable to open playgroup. The parents will have already payed the fees for tomorrow but as we are closed (no choice of our own) the will have this amended in next months fees. We the staff will not be getting paid either, so a day at home for me yipee but one day less wages :(
  • I wouldn't pay.

Can I just correct a statement made above? Council run nurseries have the same on-costs as a private run nursery. I spent all day re-forecasting one of our budgets and I wish we didn't! But they all pay the same electric, business rates, gas, and other bills as everyone else.

If the nursery is in the same building as a children's centre but is run by a private provider, the council will be billing the day care provider for their proportion of use.

Some councils use Sure Start funding to prop up their daycare provision, as the rules around children's centre daycare provision make it generally unsustainable to be self-sufficient. I could go on about this all night...

But I wouldn't pay. I'm surprised they didn't just shut the children's centre and keep the daycare provision open. Then again I'm a strikebreaker and going to work tomorrow!

why would you have to pay for a service if that service ISNT provided? so no - dont pay!
and I would query those bank holidays too - you dont get the service - why on earth do you have to pay for it?

Hi, Just wanted to check opinion and if anyone knows an actual answer to this.

My daughter is at a Childrens Centre nursery on Wednesday mornings but the CC is closed tomorrow (30/11/11) due to strike action. I was wondering if i should still pay for this session. I understand that i have to pay when nursery is closed due to bank holidays, etc as the staff still need paying but the staff don't need paying on the strike day.

Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.

    Regards
    FIO

There is no way on this earth that the staff will be paid for being on strike, in no walk of life does an employer pay for staffs wages when they are on strike!!!

If all staff are striking, the nursery would profit from the strike if parents paid for that day.

I thought the idea was to show what a valuable service they provide, so an employer profiting is kind of defeating the object, isn't it?
