iPhone 4 or 4S?!

First of all apologies if there are similar threads, couldn't see any but I might be wrong!!

I currently have an iPhone 3g with O2 and have come to the end of my 24 month contract. I know have the option to upgrade to either the iPhone 4 or 4S and I wondered if any of you had any advice or thoughts on this? Speaking to an employee in an O2 store he was of the opinion that the 4S has little extra than a 4 and recommended going to the cheaper 4.

I can trade in my current handset and join the Open Scheme so not worried about paying £170 for the handset, nor does the additional 5er a month put me off completely. It is just a case of is the new handset worth the extra money or are the improvements minimal?

Thanks for all opinions offered!!

    Hello,

Here are the actual differences for you: http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/42397/iphone-4s-vs-iphone-4

I would say that if you really NEED the Siri feature and want your phone to be a fantastic camera and videocamera, then I would go for the 4S. If you don't need the Siri feature and still want a fantastic phone camera (though slightly lesser than the 4S) I would go for the 4.

    Hope this helps :)
  • Yeah I explained to the bloke at O2 that there was no chance I would use Siri as I would feel stupid asking my phone questions!! Famous last words but it'll never catch on!!

    You would think that..

But apple collected the voices samples for the UK Siri over 5 years ago... I think they've got big plans and when Apple have big plans... they usually take off and the trucks of money roll on into cupertino...
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

arnt they still having issues with the scottish accent though?
  • I just can't see the appeal in Siri! If I am at work or walking down the street and I wanted to find out the weather forecast I would just use the weather app! The only benefit I can see is the ability to do things like make calls and send texts completely hands free when driving, other than that I'm not convinced!

Is the general thought that, if I have no intention on using Siri, it isn't worth paying extra for the 4S?
  • I'm looking at both phones as options. I have probably been into all my local high street mobile store and not one sales person has 'promoted' the 4s over the 4. None of them seemed that fussed for Siri, it's quicker by a millisecond and the larger MP camera is only better for larger prints. However, the cynical side of me would say that the 4s is flying off the shelves so it doesn't need to be pushed by any of the staff, whereas the 4 is old stock and probably needs to be shifted.

For me, the biggest decider will be down to the storage. If you're sticking with O2, I'll be surprised if you can get anything other than the 8GB iphone 4. If you want/need a larger capacity then you'll need to go with the 4s (or move to 3 mobile who still have the 16 & 32 GB iphone 4)
  • To be honest I'm unlikely to load it up with films or large files. Looking like I'm going more towards the 4 by the second, can't say I'm too disappointed!
  • Your forgetting about HSPA+ and the A5 and antenna gate. Every time you pickup the 4 it normally drops a bar (Even with a case on). HSPA+ pretty much means data speeds double (Mine have anyway) and the A5 will keep you going for a lot longer than the 4. Web browsing is a lot snappier as well.

Think of all the apps and things you won't be able to use.

I thought the same way about Siri but actually use it when I'm on my own. If I want to type a long text or note then its easier to dicate and asking Siri to setup a reminder is so easy.

The last thing is price. Most of the contracts and just buying it fully unlocked don't seem to make much difference in price.

The 4S is only 80 pounds more if you buy it straight from Apple.
  • Just when I thought I had a majority!!!

How much difference does the new antenna really make? And how much will missing out on the A5 actually result in me losing?

Like I said price isn't the ultimate factor but I don't want to be paying for things that I don't need. Many thanks for the continued help by the way!

The antenna makes a big difference. I used to have a bar at home and when I picked it up it would sometimes drop completely. Now I have 2 or 3 bars all the time. I've noticed myself getting signals in places I never did before.

The iPhone 4 was a crap phone. It's antenna is pretty awful. With the antennagate and general dropping bars. You get a lot of dropped calls.

The A5 is a lot snappier. The A4 seems very sluggish. Especially when browsing the web.
