F1

I hear F1 is going to Sky as well as BBC in 2012, we only have Freeview tv, if we got Freesat would we get Sky sport so we could see the whole season of F1, or is there any other way you could suggest, other than paying for Sky, which would stretch our OAP pension?

  • Thanks I'll pass that on to my DH who is really narked it's going from BBC. No way he will go to sky. Radio 5 live would be a decent option too IMO.

You won't get the Sky F1 channel on Freesat.

This is the Sky blurb -
The dedicated channel will be provided at no extra charge to all Sky TV customers who take both Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 or the HD pack of channels

If you don't subscribe to the Sports channels, you have to have an HD subscription.

You use both together, the stream is in German.

Oh good idea!:D I thought it was German didn't think of using both together.

I told DH he seems to think it will be on iplayer too to watch after the event.

He's right. The BBC are going to show 10 races live and the other 10 they will show highlights. Sky have all 20 live. GRRRRRR

The Daily Mail are reporting that it "could" be available on Freeview for £10/month.

Great deal for us in the UK whereas just about the rest of Europe can watch this free to air.

The usual notoriously innaccurate Daily Mail report. There is no way it will be on Freeview. The only ways it could ever be on DTT would be if either TopUpTV or BT Vision contracted with Sky to add the channel to their offerings or Sky decided to launch its Picnic service which fell through initially some time ago. BT are already investigating dropping DTT transmission of Sky Sports and distributing it via broadband (as they are at present making a serious loss on the service) which in turn would deprive TopUpTV of their feeds as they could not afford them on their own. From this I doubt very much that either TopUpTV or BT Vision will transmit it via DTT.

Note also that it is only FTA on two channels on satellite - RTL in German and TF1 in French both receivable in the UK on relatively small dishes BUT virtually all other language versions are encrypted subscription or FTV.

I'm not practising what I preach here, I'm an F1 nut, but please consider what you're getting on the Beeb before despairing about having to pay for Sky. BBC Radio isn't changing (not sure about commentary team yet...). BBC TV will have ALL practice sessions live on the red button, as well as the F1 Forum after the race. *CORRECTION AS BELOW - Non-live weekends will contain just a Qualifying highlights show and a Race Highlights show*
Race - Generally, of the 10 races they're NOT getting live (that's half the season unchanged, remember!), that would be live in the morning, will be in a 2hr long show at 14.00 on Sundays. The races that would generally be live in the afternoon (the European ones), will be in a 1.5hr show at 17.30 on Sunday.
Consider how many of you actually get up early in the morning for the races live, and whether you sit glued to the TV for the whole of the race.
It's cack that Sky have got it, but the Beeb do have a great lineup for next year for all but the most hardcore fans IMHO.
  • I think you'll find that practice sessions will only be shown for the races the BBC is showing live. Sky will show all of them.
