Hey guys, im new to 'posting' on the forum but i have been lurking in the shadows for a while now. I would like to firstly apologise for posting this in the wrong section should i do so.
This many be a long post so im will try to cut a long story short.
Basically i am 23 years old and living with the parents. I am in a good job with no worry of being laid of with the current crisis etc. I pull home just over £1000.00 a month giving the parents £120.00 board. Well this is how it used to be.
About 4 months ago i received a letter from the govenment/ local council basically telling me i have to start paying the house rent. Basically because i am the only person working in the household. The reason for this is my mum is currently ill with siatica (sp) in pain all the time so she cannot work, and my father has major high blood pressure (although looking for a job too) which cannot find a more laid back job to keep his heart from going pop. So just my father is on the dole with my mum getting a little help on the rent etc... Now because i am the only independent in the family, this letter is telling me i have to start paying around £270 - £300.00 pounds a month or we could lose the house. Obviously family is family and i will do anything to help my parents out. Although this is not where the problem lies for me.
I have a girlfriend and i sleep at my house on a wednesday friday and saturday. Because i work until late and sleep at her house. (i cannot move into her house because she is again living with parents and there is not enough room for me to get there).
Now i have spoke to the council and even wrote to my local MP asking him why and what grounds should i have to pay the £270.00 because i am only there for a few nights a week and how they have worked out the amount i have to pay.
Basically they take my gross wage and work it out on this... Now im guessing my gross wage before tax etc is about £1300.00. WHY would they work it out on gross? I mean surely the government must know that the full 1300.00 is not in my hands? without giving you my whole life spending and debt, i get about £50.00 a month to spend, not accounting for petrol and food for lunch etc. (luckily i have a good boss which buys me dinner knowing my circumstances haha).
The reason i write to you guys is advise on if there is any further action i can take. I am hold that apparently if you do not stay (sleep) more than 3 nights a week i should not have to contribute to the rent? I really hope you guys dont think i am being tight, or selfish with my money. Although £300.00 pound is rent for my own house at the moment with my girlfriend and we 'was' saving for a deposit on a morgage which has now gone out of the window because of this.
I really hope you can help because im stuck. and £50.00 a month as 23 is killing me.
Thanks alot for reading.
Joe.

You really need to go over to DFW boards and post a SOA, the people there will be able to help and break down what you're spending and hopefully reduce it.
If there are 3 adults residing in a house, and at least 1 is working, I don't understand why the rent shouldn't be paid for, who will pay for it otherwise? The government?
Is there any reason why after paying your parents £120, you only have £50 left from £1k? Are you contributing to other bills at home? The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
£120 a month for full bed and board, boy are you lucky,
and you girlfriend is staying 3 nights a week too, she should also be contributing to the electric, gas etc.
How much do you reckon you would actually eat in a month if you lived alone. Just probably about that and then you would have rent, gas electricity, water, insurance etc etc
Welcome to the real world.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

do you want to try and explain why you think i and other taxpayers should pay for you to live rent free?
you pay £120 to your parents (for a house that the rest of us pay for!!!) and yet claim that you have only £50 left. but then also claim that youre saving for a house? firstly what are you spending £830 on each month?
which bright spark told you that you dont have to pay rent if you only sleep somewhere for three nights? :rotfl:you pay rent when you live somewhere - regardless of how many nights you decide to sleep. why should the rest of us support you when you are perfectly capable of supporting yourself?
the fact is your parents are unemployed but you are not, and so while you live in their home (funded by the rest of us dont forget!!!) you should be paying the rent. if you dont want to, move out and start properly supporting yourself.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If there are three adults of working-age in a home and only one of them is earning a wage and two on benefits they have obviously taken the stance that the wage-earner should pay it. That seems fair enough to me. If you were living in a flat-share or anywhere else it would cost you the same if not more. Out of a grand a month take-home pay you should be able to easily afford it. This is your parents we're talking about here, not some stranger in the street,. If you don't want to pay that rent move out and pay your own somewhere else.0

Whose name is on the Tenancy Agreements?
Are you talking about the non dependant charge & the £270covers both rent & council tax?Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
Perhaps you can go down the road and ask the neighbours for a whip round. I'm sure if you explain it to them they'll feel it's unfair and dig deep.
Somebody has to pay .... it's either me (you've been told I won't be paying your rent), you (you've decided you're too precious), or your neighbours.
Alternatively, do you have a grandmother you can sell?0 -

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, i have debt from being a idiot when i was younger, i also pay bills like TV, phone, sky, insurance, etc and i have to buy food for my parents on some months because the £300.00 im getting isnt going to them.£120 a month for full bed and board, boy are you lucky,

Sorry if i mislead you, the GF dosnt stay. I stay at hers and stay at mine for the weekend. I can assure you i know the real world. I dont want people to think im acting spoilt.dirtysexymonkey wrote: »do you want to try and explain why you think i and other taxpayers should pay for you to live rent free?

I dont understand why you are playing the tax payers card. I just cannot see why i should have to pay for them being on the sick? I work hard for my wage, i have to pull close to 52 hours a week on a bad week on what i do. I didnt say i pay £120.00. I used to which im fine with board because obviously i use their electric etc. I now have to pay £300.00, which dosnt go to my parents no more for food etc.. it goes straight to the council. This is my main gripe.
Can i ask how is myself living at home funded by you? i still pay Tax remember.. Im not one of these that wont get a job lol. Would you expect your sibling to have to buy you food etc? I think not. I would like to stress again, i am supporting myself. I dont understand why people think im 'free-loading'

Lol at the sarcasm. Im too precious?0 -
If my parents fell on hard times, I would do everything I could to help them. If that meant subsidising them I would do so, after all they did the same for me for a good eighteen years.
If you really don't like the situation, why not move out and get your own place?0 -

My parents are on the agreement. - I believe the £270.00 covers the rent and my mum and dad are paying the council tax. Although the council wont dig deeper for me because my name isnt on the tenancy agreement.
All i know if i have to pay the £270.00 to the council which helps towards the rent.
Note to everyone else that maybe see's my logic as selfish or 'too precious'. I am paying this now, otherwise we will lose the house. My only question is why is it so high? There is no chance i can get on the property ladder which paying this.0
