Thanks for your reply. Yeah, i have debt from being a idiot when i was younger, i also pay bills like TV, phone, sky, insurance, etc and i have to buy food for my parents on some months because the £300.00 im getting isnt going to them.

Sorry if i mislead you, the GF dosnt stay. I stay at hers and stay at mine for the weekend. I can assure you i know the real world. I dont want people to think im acting spoilt.

I dont understand why you are playing the tax payers card. I just cannot see why i should have to pay for them being on the sick? I work hard for my wage, i have to pull close to 52 hours a week on a bad week on what i do. I didnt say i pay £120.00. I used to which im fine with board because obviously i use their electric etc. I now have to pay £300.00, which dosnt go to my parents no more for food etc.. it goes straight to the council. This is my main gripe.

Can i ask how is myself living at home funded by you? i still pay Tax remember.. Im not one of these that wont get a job lol. Would you expect your sibling to have to buy you food etc? I think not. I would like to stress again, i am supporting myself. I dont understand why people think im 'free-loading' :s

your not supporting yourself at all - you live in a taxpayer funded house - so how exactly are you supporting yourself? do you not understand that the place you call home is being paid for by the rest of us?

why should the rent go to your parents? they dont own the house and they dont pay anything towards it!

move out if you dont like it.

  • Pay it or move out. There is no alternative. If they've assessed that you can afford £300 a month then by not paying it you will make your parents homeless. They will have to find a way of affording the food and utility bills and whatnot some other way.

My parents are on the agreement. - I believe the £270.00 covers the rent and my mum and dad are paying the council tax. Although the council wont dig deeper for me because my name isnt on the tenancy agreement.

All i know if i have to pay the £270.00 to the council which helps towards the rent.

Note to everyone else that maybe see's my logic as selfish or 'too precious'. I am paying this now, otherwise we will lose the house. My only question is why is it so high? There is no chance i can get on the property ladder which paying this.

so you do want other taxpayers to pay your rent!

if you cant afford to save for a house then you cant afford a house. owning a house is not a right.

  • If my parents fell on hard times, I would do everything I could to help them. If that meant subsidising them I would do so, after all they did the same for me for a good eighteen years.

If you really don't like the situation, why not move out and get your own place?

I cannot move out with no money matey. I had £2000.00 saved up with the GF, which i have had to spend getting them caught a little back up on the council tax. Believe me i am doing everything i can to help. My nephew lives with us, due to circumstances. Who do you think buys his uniform and pays for trips so he can have a childhood like i do...

I think my first post makes me sound selfish.. On that note, i apologise. I was just looking for help on why i have to pay the council not my parents to help them out.. let me put the question your way...

Your parents on hard times, and they needed money etc.. Would you rather give it to them as 'board' so they can get things for house and pay bills... or straight to the council? leaving them skint?

Okay well is the Sky necessary? Are you paying interest on the debt, is there any way of moving it to interest free cards etc?

If you are paying for the tv licence, phone, food, what exactly are your parents paying for? Tbh moving into a house with your girlfriend sounds like a better idea, if you were both contributing 50/50 to a house, it sounds like you'd be paying less than you are currently.

Okay well the fact of life is everyone who pays tax contributes to people who are on the "sick" as you put it. If you don't pay for the rent, who will pay it? The Government shouldn't have to when there is someone working in the household. At the moment myself and OH are living in a privately rented flat, he works part time and attends a full time uni course, I'm not working due to pregnancy we still have to pay full rent and it's more than £300 per month.

The only way out I can see is perhaps finding a private rent somewhere with your girlfriend, with bills split equally you'd both have your own place and your parents could go back to having their rent paid.
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.

Your parents will receive Child Tax Credits for your nephew, along with Child Benefit. This should pay for his uniform, trips etc.

Rent is an essential household expense. I would ensure that bills were paid in order of priority, and rent would be at the top of the list.

I dont understand why im getting so much anger over a simple problem. I am paying it, and yes in some ways i do have a problem with it. i was simply asking if there was anything to get this lower:s
so you do want other taxpayers to pay your rent!

if you cant afford to save for a house then you cant afford a house. owning a house is not a right.

How the hell do you figure this out? I have to get 12% deposit... So i cannot afford the deposit at the moment means i cannot afford a house? Really??

Im on top of the debt luckily a relative passed and i managed to pay just over half off, so im on a good repayment plan.

Can i first say thankyou for not screaming and shouting like other posts.. This is what i was hoping for.

Yeah the sky etc isnt necessarily important.. I have tried to cancel although this runs out in June. and is on the list to go.

This is where i was confused.. I always pictured it as, if myself and the GF owned a house. And we lost our jobs of course we would have to pay the rent. Just i struggled understanding why i would have to contribute on my parents behalf because they are on the sick. Although your comment has totally justified my thinking - this is all i was looking for the slap me in the right mind set.

The only way out I can see is perhaps finding a private rent somewhere with your girlfriend, with bills split equally you'd both have your own place and your parents could go back to having their rent paid.

This is what we are looking for now. Although i really want to get on the property ladder.

I dont know if they get paid child tax and stuff. If im totally honest iv never asked. I will defo ask when i see them at the weekend though.

    Hi

Please get proper advice from one of the debt charities. I suspect that one or both of your parents has failed to provide your salary details to the Council, so they have hit you with the full whack.

With respect to Council Tax, you need to take advice. I suggest you pm CIS who works in CT rather than relying on advice from people that is coloured by their starting viewpoint.

However, in the big bad world as someone under 25 years old you would be expected to pay rent, CT and living costs with little or no help on your current salary if you left home.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
