Thanks for that Gromitt. I'm guessing that First Direct and HSBC will be similar to each other anyway.
  • I consider HSBC a serious and relatively solid bank with a superior international network. If you travel abroad opt for HSBC.

I really really really dislike HSBC!! Was with them for 8 years before I started having issues and did actually like their on line banking, but when I moved to scotland the worlds local bank disappeared.only a handful in the whole of Scotland. That wasn't my major bug with them not allowing me to cancel a SO on my account for a loan and then taking multiple payment, causing charges up the yin yang, with little help from on-line, telephone banking and not understanding the ball ache to travel to a actual branch wasn't feasable. Anyway that's my issues with them, and I apologise for the FOS fees I'm causing them at the moment, 3 complaints escalated two already upheld and positive the third will. Their complaints procedure left me with a lot to moan about. Any way good luck with whoever you go with :)

Trust me when I say this but compared to other banks, HSBC are relatively more prone to giving you want you if you make noise. I am not saying it's easy or you always get your way but in comparison with others, they do take a lot of care. Got good will credit from there twice, once an inconvenience pay that I dint even ask for and half price on my Advance account because I said it's not comparable to others in the market today. Not sure why many say their Customer Service is bad, they always pick calls within a minute or so and are quite smart and easy to deal with.

I dont get much out of the HSBC Advance account but having two regular savers putting in £250 each giving 8%, I dont mind paying them £6 a month and using only the travel insurance and free international atm withdrawals coz it's really worth my time and peace of mind banking with HSBC :)

Sorry to butt in, but could I please ask how First Direct's online banking compares to HSBC and Co-Op?
HSBC & FD are very similar, a few screenshots below:

  • I am with Co-OP for about a year now, can't really fault them. Excellent and friendly customer service, the only downside being the 'outdated online banking'. However they are offering a £200 incentive if you switch a direct debit from another bank to your co-op account I think.
  • @ just_about the co-op bank £200 incentive has now ended.

no! Have you seen how much HSBC charge for foreign withdrawals?

Well, if you travel frequently then you need to be on the right account to make a difference. For example, I have to make cash withdrawals when I travel and with HSBC Advance this reduces the costs for me. Plus, I get the multi trip travel insurance cover too which makes up for the monthly account charge (not to mention Regular Saver of £500 as joint account at 8%)

Guess it's inexpensive only if your on the right account type otherwise I agree, HSBC tend to charge higher fees in comparison to other travel card companies
