Thank you so much for this post - there are some lovely ideas in here, and I think I'm going to pinch some.

Glad to help - as long as it brings a smile to your mum's face, that's all that matters.

If your mum is close to retirement age, is it worth her considering early retirement? I know that money may be a factor that can't be ignored though. It just seems sad that she is so stressed out and can't get a new job.

Another idea is for her to let her local shops know that she would like to be considered if any vacancies come up. My local papershops have always had more mature ladies serving.

    Good luck x

Would your mum be able to take Bach's Rescue Remedy? I find it very helpful in times of stress. A stress ball can be quite useful as well, but I couldn't find a reasonably priced one when I last looked. So I went and bought some Playdoh, it works almost as well...

We made play dough during the holidays (took all of 5 minutes) and as I was colouring it with paint I added some lavender essential oil. It smells wonderful, and I thought at the time that it'd be a good gift, maybe a rainbow of colours with relaxing oils- chamomile, lavender, mandarin etc. Google instant or no- cook play dough recipes- lots of cream of tartar and salt and sooooo easy.
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

Thanks building with lego - that sounds like a nice idea too.

I tend to agree with you and told her that she should find a new job (I left a job for the same reason) - we spent a whole afternoon the other day looking for new jobs for her, but the trouble is, apart from the lack of jobs available, is that she's not far from retirement age, so people probably won't even consider her.

one WHOLE afternoon? why not post her CV online?
sounds like your mum is a similar age to me - but I have already retired from my myriad of temp jobs. I would NOT stay in a job which stressed me out. I had enough stress with family life thanks!

tbh - If I was in job which stressed me out so far that I cried at work - someone giving me jokey items would push me over the edge! mum doesnt need jokes - she needs sympathy and a way to get out!
Crying at work is a dam good reason to go to the GP and sign on sick - she is suffering from stress - and stress can result in heart attacks, strokes........need I go on?
I know I sound harsh - but your mum sounds like she is under great stress - she needs help - not jokes.

She is signed off work at the moment. I have been giving her sympathy and have spent a lot of time being there for her in person too (even taking time off work myself to do so) - I wanted to also be able to do something for her when she inevitably has to go back to work. I work too, so it's hard for me to always be there for her in person, and that afternoon was the first day she was signed off and we were trying to stay positive. I've been looking out for jobs for her since too, but nothing has come up since as people just don't seem to be hiring, or the jobs don't pay enough to cover her mortgage. I will suggest she posts her CV online.

That book looks interesting Sue - thanks for sharing the idea. Just found it on youtube as a slide show - this looks brill! Will definitely be getting this for her. She love animals.

ETA: I've ordered A Teaspoon of Courage by the same author, as I thought this would be more appropriate, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction Sue.
