Hi there sewing people, managed to get to my quilting group yesterday and helped one of our members to tack her quilt top, wadding and backing together, good practice as now I have to do mine. Trouble is you need a big table to do it on ours is extendable but not wide enough, will have to see. Hope you are all busy sewing.:)£180.00 in 'sistercas'fund

Sorry elastic, no idea, hope someone can help!
My sewing course was cancelled due to lack of interest (grr!) so I need to get practising by myself if I am going to make my bridesmaid's dress by June :eek:Weight loss: Start weight: 80kg; Current Weight: 77kg; Target weight: 55kg0 -
I have just found this following a link from another thread - I only wish I had the time to read through everything! I sew mainly costumes for medieval re-enactment, and both love and hate it at times! I was wondering if any of you knows where I can get a new belt for my old hand singer, which i would like to take to events with me - I love the idea of sitting in a field with my sewing machine!
Would this help? http://www.singersewingmachine.com/manufacture.htm0 -
Wow, I love this thread. I've inherited a sewing machine and have just learned how to thread it, with help from a friend. I have lots of curtains from my old house, but all of them are too short widthways to do curtains for this house
Soooo I'm going to tackle making some myself. But has anyone got ideas of what I can do with the old curtains? They really are too good to just throw and I love the material. I could give them away but I though i'd ask for ideas first. I'm not really a fan of cushions though. Thanks

Thanks miffy! Pixnmix, how about making them into lap quilts or bed runners? I mean by using some wadding, backing and then hand quilting the sandwich together. Or if you can bear to cut them up, use them as one of a mix to make a nice patchwork quilt(s)?
If throws and quilts aren't your thing either, how about tote bags, aprons, place mats, table runners etc?
I haven't had time to play with my quilting at all recently - still in the planning stage. I think I will try to cover the sofa and armchair, which desperately need doing, but I will have to give it lots of thought.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

Not sure why you'd need a belt, elastic? Handcranked machines usually don't need one; the crank engages directly with the balance wheel & turns it without any belt needed. If it's the little rubber bit on the bobbin winder that needs replacing, you can use either a tyre from a toy car, or an O ring from the plumber's merchants.
Alternatively, is it a treadle? They need a leather belt, which are easily available on Ebay; you have to trim & fit them yourself but it isn't hard.
Stitching outdoors is the best fun ever (well, once you get to the stage where you start to think about the drawbacks & discomfort of other kinds of outdoor fun) I sometimes drag my treadle out under the big rosebush & sit & quilt drenched in the sun & the scent, and I've even been known to take my tiny German handcrank off camping! :rotfl:

PixnMix you could make your old curtains into bags depending on the material. great for presents and many curtain fabrics make fantastic tote bags. here are some cut price patterns.

Bought some lovely fabric and some patterns that were down to £2.95 so am excited to get going with sewing clothes.
Might start with an apron as that must be easier than a top, skirt or dress!
I put a couple of photographs of the fabric on my blog (linked on my profile) as I was so excited to see pretty and useful fabric in a shop!0
