I've ordered a rotary cutter and mat (hopefully the only expense), and I'm using fabrics from my loft saved over donkeys years and whatever scraps I can rustle up.
Will try to post pics if I ever create anything worth showing!
Those rotary cutters are fab, so accurate and make putting the blocks together much easier. I'm making my first machine sewn patchwork quilt with help from a friend who is an awesome quilter. Just have 3 pattern blocks left to make , then have to cut out 24 plain blocks and sew it altogether. Hoping to finish it by march for DD's birthday. Will post pics when I finish!!!!!!!£180.00 in 'sistercas'fund
Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us.

Hello!
I'm a regular MSE'er but new to the old style board and I thought I'd introduce myself here as I am trying to be crafty, although without much success. I'm lucky that my mum owns a really good quality sewing machine and is very experienced as she used to make all my clothes as a baby/child, but I am looking to do more crafty type sewing rather than clothes. I'd be really interested if anyone could share any places they've found recycling (or upcycling) makes that aren't too difficult. My dog is going to be very happy this week as I've found a tutorial for several dog toys but other than that I haven't really got a clue.
My friend is having a baby this spring and I'd really like to make the baby a mobile, I have the patterns cut out for the shapes but I'm not sure how to attach them together if you see what I mean!
I've got mountains of fabric and no clue where to start!0 -

Has anyone any experience of Ernest Wright scissors? They are expensive but not horrendous, and offer a sharpening service.
I am about to make an entire house-worth of curtains. My old Fiskars scissors are OK but have not responded well to attempts to sharpen them. I do a lot of dressmaking and sewing and am wondering if £36 for a 9" pair of carbon steel tailors' shears is a good investment or not.

I like this site, it's where I found the T shirt yarn tutorial (brilliant for using up my old t shirts!)

My dressmaking shears are old but I sharpen them with the Fiskars sharpener and use the Fiskars Scissor Tuner tool as well - hth.Decluttering Achieved - 2023 - 10,364 Decluttering - 2024 - 8,365 August - 0/45
