OOh I'm jealous of all of you who have a sewing room and a huge stash. I have no stash as I'm just getting back into sewing, but gosh, fabric is soooo expensive. I have my eyes on some Alexander Henry fabric "Viva Frida" to make my first dress for over 20 years:eek: and it's going to cost me about £30. I'm working on the theory it will be like getting a couture dress fitted specifically for me so it's cheap compared to that. I am definitely making a muslim up first to make sure the fits right as I hope to use the pattern several times with a variety of fabrics if I like it on. I'm using an old bed sheet to test it out and will be trying out inserting a zip on scraps too so I get it perfect.

Oh your dresses sound lovely; vintage fabric for £1!? I need to get myself down to some car boots!

    Woops:o

It was a couple of older ladies who obviously had had a huge stash stored for ages. I was hugely lucky and wish I'd bought more. Carboots are great places as are house clearance sales.

My patterns came anyway, now I'm constantly trawling the internet drooling over fabric to make them in. Found a great site that sells vintage pieces and another site that seemed to have loads of variety but kept freezing so I must have another look.

Last night made up a mockup of the simple vest pattern and it's huge despite me being the exact measurements for that size, good job I did this then. So I'll be trying it in the next size down, and will definitely have to adjust the length and armholes before I use my precious fabrics for real. Am thinking of using 2 different fabrics in one vest. I will see how it goes.

Does anyone have any links to any sites? I'd love to be able to make a patchwork quilt which is what this material would probably be good for but don't know where to start...

There is a site with literally hundreds of patterns from beginners to more complex. It is American but there are instructions for each pattern. Its called Quilters Cache any search engine will find it. The patterns are mostly free.

I'm just starting out too squidge... Edit: the site I was looking at requires a payment for membership, sorry. I'm searching "free patchwork patterns" or "free quilt patterns" and am finding lots of ideas. If I find a really good free one I will share it.

Edit: this one does look good: http://www.freequiltpatterns.info/

I found some tutorials on you tube quite helpful as well. Can't wait to get started... I've ordered a rotary cutter and mat (hopefully the only expense), and I'm using fabrics from my loft saved over donkeys years and whatever scraps I can rustle up.

Will try to post pics if I ever create anything worth showing!

  • I'm quite looking forward to it. I have material at home leftover from my textiles days so I'm hoping to be able to make something half decent out of that
