I've taken up three new pairs of trousers - impossible to get them in my size in petite, for some reason. I wish I could say I'd learned to do them on the new machine but I have to confess I fell back on wundaweb :o

I am trying to give myself permission to enter my sewing room ( otherwise known as the box room lol ) I have so many bits and pieces I want to make, including a couple of baby quilts, but I feel as if I should be doing other things instead of having fun..... need to overcome that I think. Thanks so much for the thread :)

Oh, but sewing is so virtuous! It may be fun but it counts as achievement in my world and so is definitely allowed! :D

I decided to give myself Tuesday afternoons, just as if I was going out to a sewing class:) Mondays always have a lot of housework, but by Tuesday I feel I've earned a few hours. I make sure there's an easy dinner and don't feel guilty at all.
Of course I sometimes get other times up there as well, but have learnt to think of Tuesday afternoons as booked. It also means I don't get out of the habit of sewing, now that I've started.
If I was still working then I'd do the same with one evening, again just as with an evening class.
  • Thank You vl, I like your thinking :) I can tell myself I am achieving things not wasting time I should be using elsewhere :). Oooh now Diflower that's a wonderful idea :) I also like that :)
I can't wait to see all you ladies are doing :) I suppose with all this horrid weather I could hole up in my sewing room against the elements and make someone a present :) .... of course that would have to be after having cleaned the house lol :)

Hello Ladies, mind if I join you?

I am a beginner who got a sewing machine for Christmas:D

I have decided to allocate one night a week to sewing/craft and have a list of 4 sewing projects to keep me out of mischief for the next few months. I have decided on:
    • Draft excluder for living room/kitchen door
    • Aprons for my friends 2 daughters for Christmas 2012. Will add some little baking items like cookie cutters to complete their gift.
    • Some padded felt hearts scented with lavendar for MIL birthday to hang on her wall
    • 3 drawstring bags to keep the lego and playm0bil stuff in DS 20 months got for Christmasthat came in massive boxes but is only small
I just need to find somewhere to buy material!

    Happy New Year x

Felt is really cheap anyway and for some little hearts would only need a couple of squares. The shop I bought it in has them 8" and 12", I think 8" is 60p and 12" £1. I made 4 little stockings from just one large red square and a small white one.

For the sort of material you need for your other projects, think curtain/upholstery stuff, good and strong. So any curtain shops you pass, go in and see what remnants they have; if you can't see any, ask.
There's a really posh local shop that sells all its remnants for £2.50 a metre, I've bought some really lovely material for cushion covers. Also some nice plain blue thick stuff that I've used to make a bag for my electric knife so the lead doesn't go all over the cupboard:)

Charity shops too, I've had a huge linen door curtain, unused, for a fiver that made 6 shopping bags. Some were lined with pretty flowered curtain material, again from a charity shop and unused. It's amazing how many curtains you see that have never been hung - the tape's still flat:)

    Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions Diflower:T You have reminded me that I have lots and lots of old curtains in my loft from our old flat that would make the bags for DS toys and brown suede ish looking material leftover from some blinds my Mum made me (7 years ago!) to make the draught excluder.

I may also have some lilac material for the hearts that may work as good as felt.

That is a really good idea Xspender to allocate a night for sewing, it will be like going to an evening class. Good luck with your projects. I might pinch the apron one as I have 2 little girls I buy presents for at Christmas and that would be ideal for them. Thank-you for a good idea.
    Happy Sewing in 2012 :T
