  • After reading about MEAFs in March, I wrote a couple of letters (based on the template) to two previous mortgage providers. The only proof or details I had was that the Northern Rock payment of £250 was on an old solicitors letter when I remortgaged in 2006. The other mortgages were with Abbey National (now Santander) which I traced from old bank statements. I had no details of these except for amounts borrowed and dates.
So far, Northern Rock have acknowledged my complaint and are 'dealing with it' - they have 8 weeks they say to resolve it.
But the big surprise cheque was from Santander (Abbey) who I wrote to just on the offchance - I had no mortgage details only gave them my two addresses at the time and luckily I had the dates and amounts of the mortgages (not the exit fees) I had held with them.
One they paid out £140, the other they have sent a form for me to fill in with more details needed (which I don't have), so I may have to leave it there....let's not be greedy ;)

Very happy with results so far, will be waiting now to see what Northern Rock come up with!
Thank you Martin and the moneysaving website team!

Can anybody advise me on this one, when we set up with halifax in 1998 we also had to pay £768 as an additional mortgage security fee, can I claim any of this back?

    Hi Greengrass

If so where do i need to get info from?
    Cheers John

    Hi All,

We took out a mortgage in 2004 and was told that we would have to take additional mortgage security does anybody know wheather or not we can reclaim this?

    Cheers

  • I contacted the Halifax by phone after reading about reclaiming mortgage exit fees on MSE, Halifax gave me an address to write to. As we paid up our mortgage in Dec 2005 I didn't expect to get anywhere but thought worth the price of a stamp. When we took out our mortgage we were told our exit fee was £115, then we ended up paying £175 when we paid up. I sent the standard letter from MSE and 6 weeks later have received a cheque for the full fee of £175!
Thank you- MSE as we would never have got that if it wasn't for this site! :T

No. Whilst you dont see i much nowadays (there has been talk of it coming back) it is a fair and valid charge and no ruling exists or even hints of any issues with it.

Just made a 3 minute phone call to Natwest on a MEAF (or sealing fee as they call it) I was charged in Dec 2006 and without any complaint or fuss Natwest have refunded me the entire £225 direct to my A&L current account.

So easy and the best hourly rate I'll ever earn

Thanks again to this site, i moved a mortgage with Scottish Widows going back to 2002, they've just refunded me £45.00 (incl 8% interest) as payment for over charging me.

Should have been charged £75.00 but was charged £100.00 at the time of redemption.

All in all their review process took about 6 weeks and i received their letter, including the refund this week.

    Thanks again MSE.
