    Hi

I have just read your post - Could I just ask we are old Leeds Customers and the halifax took over the leeds we have re-morgaged 3 times once with the leeds and twice with the halifax does this mean we will have paid 3 exit fees which we may be able to claim back? Sorry to ask but what did you put in your letter Only I spoke to a lady at the halifax who didnt seem to know about this.
    Eagerly awaitng your reply
    Thanks

Hi - On all three mortgages when I moved to another lender it appears I had been charged more than originally advised. I only asked for the difference to be refunded but as I said, Halifax refunded the full amount charged which I wasn't expecting. If you think you may have been charged more than you were initially quoted then write to the lenders involved and ask them to check? I didn't have my old mortgage account numbers but provided rough dates and the address obviously had stayed the same. Good luck!

If you have changed products three times between Halifax and Leeds (same thing) then you haven't remortgaged at all!

Changing products with the same lender is NOT a remortgage.

You won't have paid an exit fee unless you have REDEEMED which it appears you haven't.

I have just read up on the whole refunded exit fees. I may sound daft but dont get the table. I changed mortgage providers in 2003 from abbey national to yorkshire bank, not sure what i paid in regards to exit fee. I rang them with my old account number but refused to mention the account and was told to put request in writing so am doing so now. Not sure how it works or if ill get anything back but will try.

I agree, the table on MSE is pretty useless.

There is a far better summary on the Mail's website: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/mortgageshome/article-1606732/Mortgage-fees-How-much-are-you-owed.html

    which says for Abbey:
    FEE HISTORY

Up to May 2005 the fee was £99, after which it leaped to £225.
What that means is that you will have been charged £99, and that any refund is going to be pretty small.

Generally speaking, fees didn't get increased very significantly until 2004/2005, and then they generally fell again around 2007. So the people (generally speaking) who are entitled to material refunds are those who redeemed between 2004 and 2007, but bought their product in 2004 or earlier.
  • Wow I can't believe it, I only heard about the mortgage exit fee sham last Saturday via this website. So, I got my paperwork out and found that on my existing mortgage we had paid £225 to Lloyds TSB, with the help of the list compiled on here I rang the bank and requested my exit fee back. Yesterday, 4 days later I received a payment direct into my bank account of £218 from Lloyds TSB!!! I have another 2 applications to make with them (I couldn't locate the paperwork at the time) and I'm hoping I'll get those amounts back too (£450) So thank you massively for the heads up on this and many more issues I'm extremely happy:j
  • I wrote to Halifax about an old mortgage I had with them in 2003 - 2005. I don't have any of the paperwork anymore so I just wrote them a letter asking them to review the exit fee and check it against what was stated in the agreement. If there was any difference I asked that it be refunded to me.

Yesterday I received a letter with a full refund of the exit fee plus £25 for the inconvenience of waiting so long for a response (I only sent the letter on the 2nd of November! :rotfl:

  • We redeemed our mortgage with Nationwide in 2001, I have no documentation with our old mortgage account number on. I have written twice to Nationwide with all of our details and twice they have stated they cannot find an account and are unable to proceed until we furnish them with the actual account number.

    What can we do now?

    Give up.

If the records are no longer held by the lender and you dont hold them then there is little you can do. Plus, being 2001, you are likely to be looking at figure between £0-£50 as most of the increases didnt incur until the early 2000s.

So, you have to balance the time spent, lack of information and evidence and the amount possibly that you may get back and make a call on whether it is worth it.

Legally, there is NOTHING you can do because it is more than 6 years since you redeemed. There is NO legal obligation on any lender to look back further than 6 years.
