Only noticed this about 2 weeks ago and remembered i had a mortgage with Abbey in 2004. I wrote to them and said that i was overcharged by £126 (even though i wasn't actually sure i was). They wrote back straight away and asked for the exact dates i had the mortgage with them. I told them it was 2004-2006. Received a cheque for £126 yesterday. Cost me 2 2nd class stamps.
What a result0 -
Telephoned Halifax as per instructions - spoke to a very nice gentleman - explained why I was calling - looked at my old mortgage account - told me I was owed £125, which I should receive in 10 days - simples!
Thank you very very much!
Well, it took a bit longer than 10 days, 2½ months in fact, however they sent me a cheque for £155, the overpayment of £125 plus £30, so I shouldn't complain! Thanks again MSE!0 -

I have just been contacted via phone from Lifestyle financial about a mortgage we took out through Mortgage Matters 10 years ago and remortgage 4 years ago advising that we were charged too much broker fees and inflated interest rate from Northern Rock. They wanted me to pay £499 over the phone as a deposit that would be refunded back to me once the case was paid out or if the case could not be completed. I've not proceeded with this for 2 reasons, 1. I don't have £499 and 2. I don't trust them!! Anyone else had the same thing? If these type of companies are saying we paid too much on broker fees etc is there a way we can reclaim this back ourselves rather than going through Lifestyle financial??

After receiving a large cheque from HBOS after the overcharging on the SVR, I posted on here about that and after reading about the Mortage Exit fee changes, thought I would give it a go.....
Took 1 phone call to Halifax, asking for the difference of £120 as our original mortgage had an exit fee of £55, but we paid £225, which included the deeds release (which had never changed) was put to Customer complaints who took a while, but have now received a letter that states:
"...whilst I am unable to uphold your complaint, I would like to offer you a full refund of the fee you paid."
And enclosed was a cheque for £175! Which I think is the £225 we paid, less the deed release fee of £50.
So, very happy and glad to thank MSE for the advice to give it a go!0 -
have just spoken to Natwest who have said as I had taken out additional borrowing in 2005 (original mortgage taken out in 1999 then moved but took mortgage with me in 2001) I didnt qualify to recieve meaf back as i would of been made aware of meaf at that time?? But i thought the fsa only brought this ruling in in 2007??
Confused? Anyone else had this response? Customer care team are ringing me back this afternoon as I said I wasnt happy...
Anyone help here? Or am I just not entitled?0 -
How long back can we claim for, I also paid off a mortgage in 1998/1999...can i claim a meaf from back then?0

You cannot claim a MEAF refund. You can ask for the difference back between what your contract said (either your original contract or a later deal, whichever is the latest) and what you paid.
So, if your contract said £100 and you paid £150 then you can ask for £50 back.
There is no timescale on how far back you can go. However, records may no longer exist for repaid mortgages over 6 years and MEAFs didnt start increasing much until around 2001. So, there is a possibility that you didnt pay more than you were meant to.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
