A couple of weeks ago I sent letters to Alliance and Leicester (about 1 mortgage) and Bristol and West (about 2 other mortgages).

Earlier in the week I received a cheque for £85 from A&L, and today received an offer of £95 from B&W relating to one of the mortgages, though they say I didn't pay a MEAF at all on the other.

As I haven't been able to find my records relating to the B&W mortgages, I guess I'll have to take their word for it, though it seems unusual that there was a MEAF listed in the mortgage agreement but they didn't charge me for it.

In order to receive the B&W offer I have to sign a disclaimer stating that the payment is in full and final settlement and that no other action will be taken. Unless I here something very soon that advises me not to, I shall pop the reply in the post and await their cheque!

Thanks to this site for £180 back in my pocket, which has come at a very handy time for me indeed!
All I seem to hear is blah blah blah!
  • I got £70 back from the Nationwide for my old Portman mortgage. Well worth the small effort!
  • REFUND FROM C AND G two minute phonecall and £228 to be paid into my bank within three days.result.thanks
  • Thanks very much for your help. Have just had a letter saying £150 full refund is on offer after one letter. Not bad for the price of a stamp. Now I'll just have to stop myself spending it five different ways.:j

Hi CAROLFUNKYDIVA, How long did it take for Nationwide to respond to your request for MEAF refund? I wrote to them two weeks ago and I am yet to get a response. I rang yesterday to be told that it takes time to access old records and to ring again in a week or two if I do not hear from them.

Sent Martin's letter to the Derbyshire Building Soc and received a reply within a few days saying they would look into the matter and would get back to me within 10 days. Four days later I received a cheque for £105! Thanks.
  • I have successfully claimed back a total of £440. Two fees from Woolwich and two from Northern Rock.
Woolwich - phone call, one refund identified and in my bank account in 5 days. The second refund they needed to investigate, call centre said the appropriate department would call me within 5 days, they didn't. I called again, the call centre said they would chase up the department and to expect phone call from them in 5 days. Didn't happen, but a few days later I got a letter with a cheque.
Northern Rock - two letters sent, one for each account in question. Replies within a week with form to accept refund, returned and cheques received with in a few days.
All good stuff and a great return for no more than an hour of my time.
Heard about MEAFs from Martin on Jeremy Vine show - Thanks.

I rang the Halifax this morning as we had our mortgage with them for 12 years up until last october when we switched to the HSBC.
In those 12 yrs we went on 2 discount schemes with the halifax.
    anyway I got £35 back.
  • Evening all,

I was going to write the letter but as my copying and pasting was useless I decided to call the Abbey x 2 mortgages and then the Natwest, Abbey said "no problem we'll send you 2 claim forms", and Natwest where great it took 3 1/2 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! great for £140.00, the lady said "just let me check your mortgage, yes you paid £225.00 and it should have been £85.00 whats the name of your bank/sort code and account number ?£140.00 will in your account within 10 days"

    so
    Abbey x 2 £280.00
    natwest x 1 £140.00

    = £420.00 thanks Martin xx
