  • Thank you for all your replies. I do appreciate it when the docile British consumer fights back.
    You have to understand the circumstances. First of all it was an overdue ticket from a private company on a big store's car park. My wife was not driving because she was injured at the time.
    She paid the fine because she did not want the hassle of protracted threats hanging over her head whilst she was ill. I'm sure this is a pretty common reason for paying. £20 seems a small price to pay for burying worry to many people who are not aggressive in their attitude, and unused to dealing with such things.
    Needless to say she did not sleep last night, and I kept waking up thinking about how to reply, and what information to let the company have. For example, do I include a copy of the proof of delivery? For her mental sake I cannot just ignore it, or say 'get stuffed', although I am determined to fight back. I need a killer diller way out letter.

    To be fair, no we don't. The PPC won't care about circumstances, and whatever they were, if frankly makes no difference to the invalidity of their claim.

    £20 seems very cheap for one of these sorts of tickets. It's normally £60-£100.

    Anyway, the general advice given still stands. Neither you nor your wife should worry. If it helps, sit down and check out the stickies, especially the Watchdog video, which shows this is nothing more than a scam. Would your wife be worried by a series of communications from Nigeria asking for money? No. And this is exactly the same. Treat the letters as you would any other bit of junk mail. A large, red font does not make it official or any more valid.

    DO NOT LOSE SLEEP OVER THIS. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN.

    You CANNOT fight back against the parking company. They are so thick-skinned, nothing you say will make the slightest difference. So it's not even worth trying to enter into any conversation with them. You have to understand, they have no "better side" or caring nature. All they want is your money.

    If you want to compalin to anyone, complain to the store for employing a parking company who uses such aggressive tactics to threaten and intimdate their customers. Point out that you have no intention of ever going back there, and will be going to <name local competitor> instead.

    Remember, the company can only claim their losses, not apply penalties. So all you owe them at the most is the cost of an hour's parking, e.g. a pound or two.

    Why are you so worried over this? Don't forget that this bunch of clowns are not the police or the council. They are a private company with right than you or I to demand money off people. As for "protracted threats". just treat all letters you might receive from them as junk mail, it's as simple as that. Finally this was never a "fine", it's an unenforceable invoice,

    Cancel the cheque and don't bother writing any letters.

    I think you are giving the parking company too much credit. There is absolutely no information you can give them in order for them to reply that they will cancel the "ticket".

    You could tell them you were taking your cancer-ridden baby to a hospital appointment and overstayed by 30 seconds. They won't care. They have no feelings or emotions and there is no "better side" to appeal to.

    If your wife is so fragile that she can't cope with a couple of scammer's letters dropping through the letterbox then go ahead and send another cheque. But I can promise you what will happen. Firstly they will cash both cheques and then they will send you another bill for late payment. And then the cycle will start again.

    If you pay you are a sucker. I am not trying to be rude. That is how they think of you. And they will treat you as such.

    A lot of people post the same thing as you on this forum over and over again. There's no point in saying "what if I do this" and "what if I do that." People have told you what to do and you need to do it.

    pgeorgy, there is no killer letter you can write to the PPC.

    But I would suggest you cancel the cheque (it's obviously got lost in the post and as such, many banks will cancel it for free when it's for that reason).

    And secondly I would suggest you complain to the 'big store'. Take the letters in and complain about the harassment of their customers; point out that your wife was not even driving and so they are a harassing someone who is ill and is not liable anyway.

    Do not say who was driving (you do not have to) and do not mention the stopped cheque as that's your business.

    If you complain to the Store Manager, show receipts to prove how much you all shop there, and tell him the harassment has upset you all so much that you are at your wits' end, I suspect they will deal with it and may well cancel the whole scam.

    I do hope you now understand that this was all just a scam? Never mind the circumstances, a private company cannot fine anyone. They just pretend they can and rely on the great British Public rolling over and paying up, either when they see the fake PCN or when they see the scary letters.

    Please don't be victims. Cancel the cheque and complain to the Store Manager.
