Royal Mail-Christmas Casual Problem

A while back I applied through the RM site for a Christmas casual job at my local sorting office and was invited to an interview at a hotel an hour away.

I attended the interview-was told my local office had no vacancies at all (although that was what was advertised) but they could offer me another site-which I accepted.

I was told I had passed the interview and given a load of paperwork-which said security checks would be run and that once they were complete I'd be emailed to let me know and sent a contract in the post-which I didn't need to send back as turning up for the first shift would mean I had accepted the terms of the contract.

The job starts on Monday night-I have had no contract but my status on the RM job site has been changed to say "Security Checks Passed". I've emailed the agency dealing with the selection process (Angard) but have had no response.

The job is some distance from home so I don't really want to turn up on spec hoping they are expecting me-but really not sure what else I can do.

Anyone got any bright ideas -or contact numbers ?

How do you know your first shift is Monday? Was it in the paperwork you were given and this was at the time of the interview and therefore before the security check?

As you say believe you were due to start on Monday night, there should be time to contact the sorting office during the morning.

    Yes-and Yes
Might be a bit of a challenge contacting the sorting office as phone numbers for them are now not published -and the job is about an hour away (shift starts at 22.00) so a bit expensive "popping in".
But thanks for trying to help.

Angard, the company that are doing RM recruitment this year, are having massive problems (that they won't admit to, a bit like RM really) On RMC chat the general advice is to take your paperwork with you and turn up on site at your agreed start date/time.

I'm a former postie, and I honestly haven't seen a recruitment shambles like this in the run up to christmas before. Pop along to the forums at https://www.royalmailchat.co.uk (nothing to do with Royal Mail) and you will see there are many more in the same position as you :( Looks like it's been a total shambles!

They will contact you when they 'need you'

But a friend of mine got the 7am till 2pm shift he applied in October.... and he sitll has not heard anything... (he went to the sorting office) and asked what the hell is going on... and they don't have a clue.... so he phoned angard and they said the same old crap (we will contact you when RM needs ya) - The whole thing has failed.. and its a mess....

if you haven't heard from them by the 5th of December.. then don't hold ya breath about working this year.

Wow just had a look at the forum as suggested. What a MESS !

This is an extra job for me so if I don't start it'll mess up the budget but at least I have other money coming in. My heart goes out to those who are unemployed and totally relying on this for Christmas though-and in some cases had even signed off JSA in anticipation of starting work.

As Angard is an inhouse company for RM -Royal Mail should be utterly ashamed at the way they are treating people.

There were several other threads on here regarding RM casual xmas jobs and I did warn members.

RM will only use you when they want. It is a shambolic organisation and they will think nothing of sending you home regardless of the time of day/night if they have enough cover in the first place, depite even calling you in for a shift.

My nephew worked some 4 days during one xmas when he thought he would have at least a month.

The shift managers at RM are essentially just postmen who are 'made up' as managers for the xmas period.

When you consider my postman seems to confuse my house number with some of my neighbours house numbers on a regular basis then you can realise how difficult it is for them to try and staff a sorting office.

You've kind of missed the point.
The issue discussed here isn't to do with the shift managers in the sorting offices but don't let that stop you -we all have our hobby-horses :)

If i was you're son, i would just turn up at 6am and see what happens (does he have proof of the start date?) if he does... that will go a long way,

whats he got to lose? if he's keen to work just turn up see what happens (i did the same thing with RM 3 yrs ago turned up at the wrong date but they kept me tho.
