Stefano, if you are intending to load some books onto it for her before Christmas then IMO - DO NOT DO THIS!
This is her Kindle, her present and she will want and need to set it up herself, to register and load books on it herself.
By all means find some free books beforehand, find the info on how to do it ready for when you give it to her
but if you value your life, or at the very least do not want nagging at then let her do it.
If you do not let her find out how to do this then you risk her not knowing how to do it herself and you will forever be asked to do it, instead teach her how to do it.
Remember the phrase about giving a man a fish and teaching him how to fish.
I say this from personal experience, my wife could not last year but in the last 6 months she has setup/configured at least 3 Kindles, 3 laptops, 2 mobile phones and is now the Kindle Guru at work.
If she asks for help then I advise her where to find it or how to do it but let her do it herself unless she asks me to do it.
Its the only way to go.
This is the best advice I have received so far.

It charges via USB (so any mobile's charger that uses a usb socket will work as a charger or charge via PC)
The Kindle shows up exactly like a USB stick when you plug it in. So just drag and drop PDF's and you'll be fine.
When you register the kindle with Amazon you'll get an email address you can email docs direct to the kindle, Amazon will do a bit of converting of the docs you send to be more kindle friendly.
Or use calibre ^_^
Errr....I'm a bit of a techno-idiot - so have seen this phrase about "drag and drop" to get e-books from my computer to my Kindle and not known what is meant by it/how to do it:o.
I'm okay with getting e-books off the Amazon site - but have still not worked out how to transfer other e-books from computer to Kindle.....ahemm...:o
Can anyone please give a quick Idiots Guide for this "drag and drop" procedure for me please - in words of not more than two syllables...ahem...?
(mine's a 3G and wireless Kindle version - if that makes any difference).0 -
- Open the folder where you have the books stored on your PC
- Right click on the book you want on your Kindle and select 'Copy'
- Connect your Kindle to your PC and, when prompted, select 'Open Folder to View Files'
- Double click the 'documents' folder
- Hold down the 'Ctrl' key and press 'V'
It should then transfer to your Kindle0 -
Ah-ha!
Thank you for that:D - sorted now..:D0 -

Kindle uses it's own proprietary file system (MOBI), not the EPub system used by most other ebook readers. EPub books with DRM purchased for use on other readers cannot be easily converted to read on a Kindle. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
errmm? What is DRM short for?
In my case - its more a matter of wanting to get Project Gutenberg books, for instance, onto my Kindle. I followed the instructions in a book on Kindles to the letter as to how to get a book straight over from Gutenberg onto my Kindle and got the downloading "circle" going on and on and on and on...and had to look up the Kindle queries section on Amazon to get my Kindle to work again - as it just froze.
Thought transferring books onto my p.c. and then, from there, onto my Kindle would be a way to get round "theres summat wrong with either the book instructions or, more likely, the Gutenberg website...".0 -

Calibre seems to make an easy enough job of converting .epub files to .mobi
I thought Kindles propriety file format was .azw? - I believe .mobi is just .azw without the DRM0 -
Yes, sorry, you are correct-so non-DRM files converted by Calibre will read on the Kindle as .azw.
OP: Digital Rights Management: the copyright protection system used on commercial e-books. Guteneberg-sourced titles are copyright-free, so DRM is not necessary.
Many of the Guteneberg titles are available for download in MOBI format, so no conversion is necessary. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
For anyone that's interested...
Anyone that has LOADS of books on their Kindle has probably spent AGES sorting them into 'Collections'. Here's a little application I found a while ago that does it in seconds...
