Just bought a new kindle as a xmas present for my wife. How do I load some free books onto it? How does it charge?

If you register it to her Amazon account (menu > settings > register), you can just browse to Amazon and search for the free books on there.
Or you can google "free ebooks" and download calibre to transfer them onto the Kindle.
When you say "how does it charge", do you mean cost or electricity?Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

I meant electricity
Then just plug it in with the plug it came with..? Did the Kindle not come with the 'instruction page' open?
Or have you bought it second hand without accessories? In which case you need a mini USB connector.Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -
As said - just plug it into the USB on your comp and it'll show up as a mass storage device just like a memory stick
Books go in the 'documents' folder and need to be in .azw, .mobi or .pdf format
Alternatively, use Calibre as your library
http://calibre-ebook.com/
This will allow you to upload and delete books easily as well as the ability to convert non supported formats, such as the popular .epub to a Kindle format.
Project Gutenberg has lots of free books to offer

It's still packed and I am a total novice. It's the wifi version.
If used as mass storage device, can I move work PDF files onto it and save on printing them?0 -
It charges via USB (so any mobile's charger that uses a usb socket will work as a charger or charge via PC)
The Kindle shows up exactly like a USB stick when you plug it in. So just drag and drop PDF's and you'll be fine.
When you register the kindle with Amazon you'll get an email address you can email docs direct to the kindle, Amazon will do a bit of converting of the docs you send to be more kindle friendly.
Or use calibre ^_^Laters

If its one of the new el cheapo Kindles, its supplied without a mains charger, just the USB cable.
I find it takes forever to charge of a PC.
So if you don't already have a usb charger you'll need to get one.

Stefano, if you are intending to load some books onto it for her before Christmas then IMO - DO NOT DO THIS!
This is her Kindle, her present and she will want and need to set it up herself, to register and load books on it herself.
By all means find some free books beforehand, find the info on how to do it ready for when you give it to her
but if you value your life, or at the very least do not want nagging at then let her do it.
If you do not let her find out how to do this then you risk her not knowing how to do it herself and you will forever be asked to do it, instead teach her how to do it.
Remember the phrase about giving a man a fish and teaching him how to fish.
I say this from personal experience, my wife could not last year but in the last 6 months she has setup/configured at least 3 Kindles, 3 laptops, 2 mobile phones and is now the Kindle Guru at work.
If she asks for help then I advise her where to find it or how to do it but let her do it herself unless she asks me to do it.
Its the only way to go.0
