Ok here we go ; there are 2
Broadcom 80211n network adaptor - driver version 5.100.249.2
Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit ethernet - driver version 14.0.1.0
In security it only says windows firewall (home or work (private)network - not connected
Public networks - connected
Seems like your ethernet adapter driver is up to date. Did you say you were using windows 7? As your wireless adapter driver version number seems to come back to a Windows Vista driver. Can anyone else confirm this through research? Apparently 5.100.249.2 is a Vista driver.
Also, try what Myser just said, and if that doesn't work, disable your firewall (will explain how to do this when we get to that stage) and see if that gets a connection.
If non of this works, looks like you may have to re-install the drivers for your network adapter.0 -

You shouldn't have to delete adapters , just either disable the wireless adapter from Network and Sharing Centre(NSC) and plug in the ethernet cable , or if wanting wireless go to NSC and select manage wireless networks and delete them all, diasble the adapter and re-enable it and the it will ask you for the password for your home network. The fact he has public networks in there means he has been surfing outside of the Halls or mistakenly connected to a neighouring hot spot.

Trying to do stuff now not ignoring everyone - at uni he did try other Ethernet cable and other people tried to connect in his room which they could. He spoke to the IT support and they said it was a problem with laptop. He has brought it home now and it won't connect at home either so must definitely be with laptop?
Thanks again for trying to help
Yes, it is, because you've therefore eliminated both the network and the cable as possible faults. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
ok, try the following.....
open a command prompt (as administrator) and type the following (without the quotes) ...
"ipconfig/flushDNS" and press Enter.
once done, do "netsh winsock reset catalog/ " and Enter. make sure there's a space after the slash. This one will need a reboot to take effect.
and then retry......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Thanks you guys for all your help - someone with a bit more knowledge than me (not much but not hard!) followed the disabling the anti virus route - infact it was taken off and then put back on but seems to have cured the problem.
:j You really all are so helpful - its why I love this site. Thanks again till next time x

Glad to hear you managed to sort out the problem.
These network related problems always seem to be caused by firewall or anti-virus software!
I hope you didn't pay a lot of money for Webroot?
There are plenty of other (free) good AntiVirus and Firewall programs available. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -

Yes there are, many people have different opinons on which antivirus software to use. And someone will not dought contradict my opinion.
I would reccomend AVG Free for antivirus and Spybot Search and Destroy for spyware. Windows Firewal should be good enough on its own aswell.0
