Do you run any addtional firewall software such as Norton, McAfee or AVG?

These have been known to randomly stop network connections from working.

If so, try temporarily disabling the firewall by right-clicking the icon of the program in the task tray (near the clock) and disable etc.

So long as you are behind the router firewall, you don't need to worry about the software firewall being disabled for this test.

Also, on the odd occasion, windows firewall has been known to block network connections if that is the one that is being used.

Also, if it is the one being used, it is disabled in a different way to an external program, you have to go into the 'control panel', then click on 'security' and then click on 'Turn Windows Firewall on or Off'
  • Thanks for your continued help - scotty_591 it is an acer aspire 5742z - have been online but don't know if it is because it is late but can't find it?

Try disabling the firewall in Webroot. There should be an icon near the computer clock for it. Either right-click and disable or double click to open it.

I just did a quick search online and people do mention that Webroot has prevented them from connecting to a network or getting online.

Can it connect at home using ethernet? Forget the wireless side for now, because the original problem was with ethernet.
The very first thing he should have done at university was to swap the ethernet cable over and try that-presumably all his neighbours have one that he could borrow.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Quick question, what is the make of the network adapters and what type they are (wireless or not) that appear in the device manager, you can find this out by going on properties (follow the steps in my previous posts) - Also, if you could tell me the driver numbers of them.

As for the firewall, which one are you using?
    >Click on 'control panel'
    >Click on 'security'
    >Click 'security center'
    >Click the 'Firewall' dropdown menu
    >It should tell you what firewall is protecting your computer - which one is it, Windows or webroot?
  • Trying to do stuff now not ignoring everyone - at uni he did try other Ethernet cable and other people tried to connect in his room which they could. He spoke to the IT support and they said it was a problem with laptop. He has brought it home now and it won't connect at home either so must definitely be with laptop?
Thanks again for trying to help :)

Ok here we go ; there are 2
Broadcom 80211n network adaptor - driver version 5.100.249.2
Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit ethernet - driver version 14.0.1.0

In security it only says windows firewall (home or work (private)network - not connected
    Public networks - connected

If disabling Webroot hasn't work, I usually find the following works. Before you do this, ensure you have the driver discs that came with your computer to hand as they may be required.

Go to Control Panel and Device Manager as before and delete each network adapter from the list. You can either do this by clicking each one and pressing the delete key or by right-clicking and selecting delete. Then restart the computer. When Windows restarts again, you should see a message saying network driver found/installing.

What this will do is re-configure the network adapters to their default settings.

    Edit
I just read your post which indicates that you are connected to a network designated as Public.

Type the following into the Internet browser on the laptop without www:

    http://212.58.244.59

Does it bring up the BBC News page.
