Another thing to remember is that many uni networks connect to the internet via a proxy server.

If he has changed browser or connected elswhere/changed anything, then returned, he may have lost the setting. Also, some browsers are better than others when it comes to handling/switching between and autodetecting proxies.

His IT pages ought to have setup guides for main operating systems and browsers, you should be able to download them from home and double check. Some unis also include utillities to set-up your browser/network settings with little hassle at all.

Definetly agree with this, my Uni's proxy server is a pain sometimes, but usually if you don't have your browser set up correctly (I know this is the case at my University) the server will tell you that your browser is not set up correctly

Sorry, I was called away (for a few beers) but Scotty's given some sound advice.

I was going to suggest trying it on your home network.

It's rare (but not impossible) for a network adapter or piece of wire just to "go bad", so there's a number of things we can try before shipping it off for repair.

If it's a recent machine I expect it will be running Windows 7. I'm still on XP so details may be a bit different but the principals are the same.

I'll watch the thread and help out if I can.

  • Hi there he is home!! Have computer in hand now!! Right it is not connecting to our wireless connection at home. There is a yellow exclamation mark on connection icon? Have so far tried How do i fix network adaptor problems reset? not worked :(
  • also tried trouble shooting - nothing?
  • Hi again, could be a number of problems.

    First of all you need to see whether your network adapter drivers are up to date;
    >Open start menu
    >Click control panel
    >Click on 'system and maintenance'
    >Find and click on 'device manager'
    >Find and expand the 'network adapters' button (about halfway down the list)
    >Right click on each of the items in this dropdown menu and select 'update driver software'
    >Windows will then search for driver updates
    >Install any it finds

Let me know how this works out

Its windows 7 and still won't connect :(

It shows our network connection and says it is connected
  • I presume you can connect to your router using another computer?

Now, the check you performed earlier will have only checked your computer for the drivers and not the web (due to no network connection).

So, complete the steps i mentioned above again, but instead of clicking on 'update driver software', click on 'properties' (on right click menu) and navigate to the 'driver' tab. Write down the 'driver version' for all of the devices under the 'Network Adapters' dropdown list.

Then use a computer with the internet, go to the laptop manufacturers website, go to the download section, and try and view the drivers for your sons computer model, and if there are any network adapter drivers, compare the version numbers (also, make sure the device names match up).

I can't explain how to find these drivers any further as it is dependant on the manufacturers website. If you have trouble finding these drivers, let me know the manufacturer and model of laptop and I will try and find them.
