Im sorry, I mentioned the north/south divide, really I should have said 'them's that's got and them's that's not cos I know many of you here are from down South and working hard to keep your heads above water. When they bring in the new rules there will suddenly be a crisis elsewhere created to distract us. Like the poll tax - we were all incensed by it and the government merrily went on its way destroying other things while we ranted and protested.

Thriftwizard boy are you going to have to become good at pinching those pennies till they squeak. freeze a few of the brownies for another day before anyone notices, then when you are all a bit low, pull them out of the freezer like Houdini and suprise everyone:p I do that all the time, also saves going and buying chocolate for a treat and spending 20 quid in the shops :)

Possession , theres no data base mate, they just pick a figure double it, stick a pin in a map and Bob's your auntie.

Well I have scrubbed the house an antidote to all the possible cutbacks so at least the house is shiny, and had a NSD -think we are all going to need lots of NSD's.

Thanks grandma and the ply info is really helpful too. I've been knitting this afternoon as well. Still on with my leg warmers - the kids have 'put an order in' :rotfl: for multi coloured legwarmers. DD aged 7 loves her bag :D I've enjoyed switching off this afternoon.

MrsL I will have a look for the corned beef and if I can find it at that price I'll get a couple. Thats £1 cheaper so hopefully.

There's something about BBC news that has made me turn off. I'm really not sure why other than I'm fed up of listening to other people's opinions on matters. I would like news, as it happens - hard facts, not reams and reams of professionals chirping in or people from the street giving their views.

The guardian is my source now too. It used to be the times but no more due to who owns it.

Hi thriftwizard, come on in, pull up a chair and get nattering :D

Yeah oldtractor it is so going to get worse.. tougher. Maybe, as this thread is so huge we should ask to start a new one to mark this new phase? Maybe there are some people who are lurking who would love to chip in but don't because of the size of this one.

Whadda ya think (and I can't find the links to the past ones to put in the front page, maybe some one will do a better job than I did in starting the thread :D)

Wartime clothing  at the fact I actually like a few of the styles :rotfl: I suit an apron best though ;)

Thankyou Old Tractor for your comments on the financial situation.
I agree with you that we cannot blame the present government for the mess-they are trying to clear it up.
I know how hard it is to mannage - DH and myself get £9,000 a year OAP to mannage on. We pay full council tax and have to pay for dental treatment etc.
I try to get on with(and moan a bit as things do get difficult) and we do mannage. We have no debt - never have had inspite of the fact we only ever had a small income during our working life
WE have mostly 2nd hand furniture (our kitchen is 27 years old) and clothes. We cut eachothers hair - I could go on. We mannage.
The country is in debt - none of my doing - and it has to be paid back. Just as with households you have to face the music someday. It is going to be tough but there is only one way and that is to square up to the problem, get it sorted and look forward to the future being brighter.
I also agree we should save a little- I always saved "sixpence a week" It mounts up and it gives you HOPE jac xx

Hello everyone and ((hugs)) to all those in need. I haven't had time to take in all the posts yet (goodness, you lot can talk!) but can see that lots of people need sympathetic hugs and virtual tea and cake today :(

I am continually amazed by the fact that so many people take so little interest in the world around them. I'm not clever enough to understand a lot of what goes on (economic stuff really goes over my head) but at least I try to understand. Having said that I am not sure watching it all does me much good, it's so depressing and just drags me further down the spiral :(

Grandma - thank you so much for the 1940s clothing links! I love 1940s fashions, and will avidly read anything about WW2 social history :)

Kidcat - glad the night passed without incident; hope the worst is over for you now.

  • I would also like to say thanks to OLDTRACTOR - whoever caused the problems we have now is inconsequential what we have to do is focus on staying afloat collectively. This thread is such a support, I'm constantly warmed by the kindness, compassion and sheer commonsense that is here for everyone - no distinctions made and no questions asked, no judgements made we are all in this together, bit like the Barmy Army that follows cricket but with a bit more knowledge (usually relevant in some area or other) and a bit less beer! It is such a difficult time for everyone, and part of that is not really knowing what is coming next, or being cut next - it's no wonder we get ruffled and testy, we are only human.

We don't have masses of savings, or a pristine new home, in fact I think if a burglar broke in here he might leave us something because nothing we have is worth material money, but we love it all and it's comfy and home. Everything we have is second hand or passed down but it's ours and it doesn't matter a hoot. Where I feel oh so rich is in the sharing, friendship and tolerance I feel from all of you and count myself very, very fortunate to have it! So. what ever happens we have the support we need THANK YOU each and every one of you Cheers Lyn and the lurcherxxx.

I knew what you meant Ginny, just that the South West (the deep end :rotfl:) is often the forgotten area and whilst having a lovely area to live in, there's always a price to pay. I know when I go to Cardiff for instance I'm gobsmacked at the cheaper food prices.

Kidcat, so glad your DD is ok!

My DD had a doctor's appointment this morning and as it was about the anti-d's she's been put on, wanted me there. So a round trip of 50 miles for 2 minutes in the doctor's! aaaggghhhh. He did apologise as he said another dr had made the appointment but he would have phoned DD instead. He is such a lovely dr though.

So, I had to pop in on some cats, so loitered around, first into L!dl and then to a local garden centre.

I'm really tired now, as driving just stresses me at times.

For me, I was so supportive and hopeful that DC could turn us around. I even considered voting but being deeply working class - Grandad was a miner, I couldn't. I'm pleased now I didn't and understand what tory values are. That being said I am still hopeful that DC can help us out of this but I'm becoming so frustrated at the idea that we're all in this together. It doesn't feel like that.

It feels like hard working, working class people are being hit the most. Low earning families, blimming hard working families are being hit by more an more taxes. Maybe I'm blinkered, maybe I'm feeling it because it's my people that i'm surrounded by, struggling. I guess it's important to realise that yes, the working class are being hurt and badly but so are middle income earners.

This whole idea of cutting those who live out side of the London area benefits will, in my opinion, stop what I hope will happen... and that is we all pull together as a country, battening down, helping one another - it's something well over due and I think it can happen as it's happened before. Helping along the 'them and us' scenario will have people angry - and angry at each other. I think anyway. What do I know huh?! :rotfl::)
  • You speak sense young FUDDLE,it won't be easy for anyone whatever thier status, wherever they are categorised socially whatever they have or don't have. I think life will be very difficult for all of us and become increasingly tedious and trying but I think we will endure, we shall come out of this stronger and probably know ourselves better than most people. The british nation is infinately resourceful and courageous and at thier very best in times of adversity and trial. I think OSers will find thier time has come and be able to help get all of us out of the mire and help us stay out for good. We're strong and willing we'll do!!!!! Lyn xxx.
