I can't buy 100's & 1,000's anymore here - they've changed to small quantities in little plastic bottles - more expensive also - but all seem to contain either dairy or egg now. If anyone knows where I can get ordinary ones again i'd appreciate it - we only have the co-op here, but in the city we have sainsburys tesco and asda - otherwise online would be good
    thanks, WCS

WCS - according to AFS (Animal Free Shopper) Dr Oetker 100s & 1,000s are vegan although they are only 65g tubs.

Or try here WCL - only seen the kilo tubs, but might be worth it depending how many trifles you make :). They have data sheets for all their products.

ETA: Just seen the courier charge !!!

Interesting site that - thanks. The 100s & 1000s are veggie not vegan but if WCS just avoids dairy/eggs they are OK. Wish more sites had proper datasheets for their products.

As posted elsewhere, I was tinkering with the idea of joining the Approved Foodites, but as we have a BM Bargains in a nearby town I took The Trolley and my trusty disability bus pass and investigated this week.
Some smashing little bits and pieces and most of what I would have bought from AF, but also some extras - a nice melamine tea tray resembling a street sign to jazz up my kitchen. A few stocking fillers for DGD and DGS - never too early!
A lovely box of luxury chocs (milk, so I won't eat them) that are destined for the live music club's weekly raffle. Lots of other temptations and also an extremely friendly and pleasant sales assistant. It's so nice when low cost doesn't mean low standards of service.
My local Heron Foods is outstanding in this respect. Some years ago I wrote to the town free paper in gratitude for this and the staff were absolutely thrilled.
I'd originally written the letter in to the Teesdale Mercury in support of a Heron opening in Barnard Castle; 'Barney' can be a bit 'up itself' and the Mercury had published an article with an air of 'is this the sort of shop we want here - what sort of service will we get?'
With a large population of elderly people struggling to make ends meet on reduced incomes, of course it was wanted and I gave the exemplary service at my local Heron as an example of what they would probably (and do) experience.

Thanks Lizzyb and Mrs Chip - Lizzyb we do have Dr O items in our co-op but they all have egg, I'll keep an eye out for other products though as that sounds promising. Mrs Chip would happily have a kilo of them - I do use quite a lot and i'm guessing they'd have a long shelf life. Only my daughter is vegan - she lives away from home now - but we are strict dairy/egg free for one of us, so at home we cook/bake dairy/egg free for all of us to save hassle. We didn't eat any dairy/egg for years, but now youngest is grown up we do a little but have separate cooking/eating implements for it.

eta: looked at the delivery charges Mrs Chip - £36 to here!!!!!! that would be one expensive biscuit!!!!!! still goes to show they're out there! will look when i'm in the city.
    Thanks!

edited again to say: so wish we had cheaper stores near by, its difficult enough without adding in the hassle of a restricted diet. Drove to our nearest tesco yesterday - 37 miles but takes 1.25 hours each way - couldn't get half of what I wanted, between changed ingredients, a reliance on pre-packaging stuff with sauces etc in the meat isle and a reliance on branded items rather than own-brand I spent a fortune and bought very little. Occasionally I drive to the city to shop, but its 2.5 hours each way and makes a really tiring day.

Did Barnard Castle get their Heron Foods mcculloch? I know the place a little as drive through it sometimes when we go to the Lakes. I know what you mean by a bit... you know ;)

No Heron's near me I'm afraid but my mum is getting one in her village. It's a commuter village so quite bustling but still, good to see the shops going into the places where they are really needed.

I worry about people living in remote areas with the cost of petrol/upkeep of car and dwindling bus services. My village is semi rural and in between various City's and town but our bus service has been cut right back due to council funding being withdrawn. That means people in our village can no longer get a bus straight to town. We have to get 2 or three before depending on where we're going. The cost is horrific too.

Mrs Chip my DH would likely not have noticed either. Maddening isn't it. And I sympathise (or that may not be the right word) on the eating whatever has not sold. Whatever was made is delicious, but after two years of it we were completely fed up with it. Mind you, having stopped the business and now just doing the odd bit of catering it's nice to have the same food again so it didn't take long to start missing it.
An exhausting morning doing outside stuff before it poured down - changed the net on the trampoline as the old one had fallen to pieces, and engaged the giant triffids at the front in a major fight, which I'm pleased to say, two trips to the tip later, we won. Now after a late lunch I need to take the children to get something for Father's Day (I am not a last minute person so have no idea how this crept on me) and get back as someone is collecting something I put on Freecycle. Am tired out but it feels like I've accomplished something today, at least.

    Morning All!

Grey wet and windy here today :( . And not a good start to the weekend - we have run out of oil:mad::mad::mad:. Those of you who were her at the back end of last year may remember we had to have our oil tank replaced. OH has been checking the level regularly and has been very pleased with himself as his miserly control of the boiler was making the oil last wonderfully well - except it obviously wasn't as we ran dry this morning. The level indicator is stuck at the same point it was when I last looked at Christmas - he can't understand why I am so cross that he did not notice it not going down :mad::mad: No delivery until Monday (could be worse) so no hot water, and we will have to bath in the cottage next door with the spiders :eek:e

Are all Oh's afflicted with an inability to actually take in information about the world around them? Lovely as he is, mine walks around in total oblivion - the house could be burning down and he would not notice!

Working tonight so dinner will be whatever has not sold - and with the weather as it is I don't think we will be busy, so that may be quite a lot!

Hope everyone has a lovely day whatever the weather!

I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas - just placed my first AF order :T Can anyone tell me how long I've got to sort out the Room of Doom where my storecupboard is before it arrives please? For anyone who likes Dove flour they've got wholemeal plain and wholemeal bread flour and gluten free gram flour as well.
