    Am whispering this GQ,
So far, touch wood, I have had no problems with slugs in my big blue Ik*a bag!! Mixture of salad leaves, tomatoes, fennel and cougette plants. (Yes, over crowded I know!) Creeping quietly away in case the slugs hear me! :p

    Fuddle
:_ We get big Orange ones! I have heard about egg shells too.
Give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temparate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.”
  • My cabbages have been totally eaten by something, can't be slugs too much damage in one night, could it be squirrels? I have put some netting over them now, talk about horse bolting, door shut!!

Any other tips to keep wildlife at bay? I have some onions and carrots growing, these seem to be OK at the moment.

    Have a good day everyone.

    MM:)

DH told me when I got home from work last night that he had watched a squirrel pull out an onion seedling that I had planted last weekend and run up the tree with it.

I did ask why he didn't follow it and get my seedling back. We've got loads of them, and they shouldn't be causing this much damage at this time of year. They are probably thinking it is autumn with this weather and haven't got enough nuts.
  • Morning toughies, did anyone see the item on the BBC news this morning about time allowed for pedestrians to cross at Pelican Crossings? The cheeky blighters said by the time you reach 65 you weren't capable of making the other side of the road before the lights turned green again! I've only got 6 months to go before apparently I become moribund! Comments please!!!!!!!!!!!! He he Lyn x.

    Morning All!

Fuddle - Whatever happened to graciously accepting presents whether they were suitable or not? I would be very cross!

Kate - Sorry about tooth, been there too, and yes, back in the old town I thought about visiting the local 'bros' for something a little stronger :rotfl:

Byatt - glad DD is feeling better, you must be relieved, but palpitations now? Poor you!

    Welcome back Sammy!

Slugs - we have them in bucket loads BUT - touchwood - I have not lost too much to them this year. My strategy is to, where possible, not put anything nomable straight into the ground, I sow into pots and modules and use blue pellets in the pots - at least I know they are safe for other wildlife there. Once the plants are big enough to be planted out they are generally too big for slugs to do major damage - not infallible but seems to work here.

Where there is no choice I do sow direct and use the pellets as directed (i.e well spread and that seems to work fine) Slugs don't seem to touch carrots, so they are fine in the ground, but I will erect a fleece barrier around the seedling to deter carrot fly.

Cats, squirrels and rats will dig so I have to cover all newly sewn beds with prickly sticks - keeps off the cats, but not sure the rats are bothered by them!

I have got enviromesh draped over the laid -down frame of a tom grow house over my strawberry patch now that the berries are ripening, this keeps the birds off. I'll do the same next year for the fruit bushes, I will play with the two grow house frames to see what I can build with them (a bit like grown-up Meccano!). enviromesh is very good stuff, very robust and light, easy to lay over crops as a temporary measure for protection and the rain and light gets through. I find fleece here gets shredded by the wind, so only lasts the season.

Off to make a batch of fat balls for my friend who runs the farm where we stay in Cornwall - we can't use them here as they drive the jackdaws into a frenzy, so it's good that I can make some to get rid of our used fat from the fryers. Good thing to do on a rainy day, no yet but threatened big stylee later!

    Have a good one everybody!

MrsLurcherWalker I saw that about crossings, they could have worded it a bit better. When I had an op on my leg last year I could barely make it across the crossings in time. I did agree with them that some motorists will not wait until all the pedestrians are off the crossing but it also annoys me that some adults will step out onto the road (not a crossing) and run a couple of steps and saunter (sp?) the rest leaving the motorist no choice but to slam on the brakes.

  • Hi UNIXGIRL - I quite agree that both pedestrians and drivers take risks at crossings, and you are right, they could have worded it better. It was just that blanket statement that after 65 you were so slow that you couldn't even cross a road in the time allowed. They perhaps should spend time with some of us on here to give them perspective? I wonder if the whizzie young reporter would be able to keep up! Cheers Lyn x.

This is generalising a bit but I've found older people fall into 2 categories when crossing the road - the look alll round and listen then march quickly across lot and the nervous to step off the pavement and shuffle slowly across lot. Depends on your overall fitness and whether you have been stricken with an illness/condition that slows you down but attitude counts for a lot as well.

Slugs have not had a go at the sweetcorn. The seed was free anyway so it's an experimental batch really to see if my allotment is a good place to grow it. If I get just a couple of cobs I'll be pleased.

Monster pup now soaking wet and tired after an hour's walk round the lake and I'm off to the eternal weeding.
