mardatha - I think you may well be right, and hes right too they have declared war on the sick and needy, trouble is they have spent so long convincing the rest that the sick and needy should be picked on that the rest of the country seems to join in too.
WAs speaking to a mum outside school today and she was full of how its time the govt sorted out all these scrougers and made them work for every penny, cleaning the streets if needs be I asked how much she had saved - she said not a penny, so I pointed out that if she or her husband lost their jobs, would she be happy brushing the street 40 hours a week for dole? She went white.

She'll be in for a nasty shock when they take away or cut her benefits - the tax credits and the child benefit. Maybe the government should make her sweep the streets or stack shelves in TESCO.

    GOOD FOR YOU :j

I'm sooooooooo sick of hearing people who've decided all those in receipts of benefit are workshy scroungers who should work... it makes me  and :( in equal measure, because you can never ever judge anyone unless you have walked a mile in their shoes and for every one of the 'workshy' there will be 1000's of perfectly decent good people who are too ill, physically or mentally, to work, who have serious educational challenges, or have fallen foul of illness or circumstance, or plain and simply cannot find one of these supposed 'thousands' of jobs that exist (we all know they don't - chugging isn't a job opportunity and neither is being a 'hostess' or pole dancer )

This forum is one of the few I still come onto because that attitude is so prevalent elsewhere, it's wonderful to be able to come on here and tell the tales of the people I know who have fallen on hard times, and have you lot be sympathetic and do dodgy hugs and stuff ;) because you all know too that the vast majority of people out there really ARE struggling!!!

This is going to sound mad and over the top - but its me eh :D - I always wondered why the German people stood by and let Hitler & the nazis do what they did ?? Kept thinking how on earth did they let it happen.. and then I look at what's happening here now. Nothing remotely like the evil of Germany in the 30s - but still a civilised decent people letting things - that are not right - happen under their noses and standing back doing nothing. So now I understand. The only positive thing I see in it is that as hardship touches more and more people, then these same people will surely to god understand that it can happen to anybody

It seems to me a pointless exercise that is only harming those in most need - the few people who claim benefits as a "career", as it were, will continue to receive them as they know the system inside out and can play to the crowd. Those that really need them and are just honest and truthful about their limitations, or play them down, are the ones who are losing much needed benefits hand over fist. It's very frustrating from a work point of view, and worrying of course from a personal point of view. Two years ago I was a healthy 50 year old - fast forward 2 years and i'm riddled with arthritis that came on rather spectacularly. It has totally changed the face of my future. As someone else said earlier, you never know when it will be you

Hello tougher folks. :) I'm coming back to this forum from a long break. Whenever I feel down I come back to this forum and the 'tougher' threads, because it's like coming back to reality - that my life is not especially !!!!, I'm not an unusual failure, we are all struggling.

It makes me feel better - not happy and smiling, but down in a more healthy and less self-hating way - if that makes any sense to anyone. This is how things really are - beating myself up over how things are not is not healthy.

Today I was depressed by a stupid article in the guardian about how 35 was the 'best age to be'. What a load of !!!! - I like being 36, but I recognise that some good things have passed, whilst other good things are still to come. There's no 'best age', what a depressing thought for those of us who have supposedly past it. I'm also told by the Guardian that by 35 we should all be in a happy marriage, have children, and be owning our own home. Way to make people feel good about themselves. Well I'm blessed to have a good marriage and daughter - but I recognise that this is not a norm or a milestone you've failed if you havn't got - MANY of my contemporaries are single, or single parents, or infertile - and I certainly don't own a home and neither do half my friends. I've no prospect of it.

I guess where I'm going with this is that I'm fed up of supposed 'normal' and ideal life paths being propogated in the media, for everyone who 'falls short' to feel bad about it. This thread provides a dose of real life.

PROUD TO BE DEALING WITH MY DEBTS

Mar that is exactly how it happens, a group of people are vilified for one aspect of their life, and this translates in people's minds over time to include anyone with any of the characteristics that group possess. These groups of people are usually powerless, and in their struggle for day to day life have not the resources to fight against stigma and discrimination. It's just a matter of time before they are seen as scapegoats, and then it becomes "ok" to treat them as sub-human in some way.

Mardatha - all it takes for evil to thrive is for good men to do nothing. And that is what is happening here. If camps for the unemployed were suggested to save benefits and housing costs would people stand by, probably at this point. Sad to see and hear.

ETA - hi clarienne, you are right, no such thing.:)

Tell me more about soaking seeds - I got some purple dwarf seeds here and tried 4 in wee pots just for fun - none of them ever appeared :(
Also does anybody get the Asda "spring greens" at 97p a bag ? What kind of cabbage is that, does anybody know? It's the only one my chickens will eat!

Beetroot seeds always need a good soaking to do well - just pop them in a small bowl and soak for at least 24 hours

Spring greens are lovely - around here they are a dark green flat leaved brassica with no 'heart' - chopped and steamed with a bit of butter = :):)

Its getting scary and things are moving fast - Latest housing bulletin - new debate re: giving British Citizens a higher priority over immigrants and higher priority if they have no ASBO or criminal records.

Times they are a'changing - and not for the better :(

maybe not camps for the unemployed but you hear a lot of people saying "teenage mums should be housed in hostels so that they have support and childcare on hand rather than getting their own flats straight away and popping out another one whenever they need to top up their benefits" yada yada. It's much more easy to sell something that sounds relatively humane
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
