Am shaking - I know its mega stupid but when the doorbell rings at this hour panic sets in. Partly due to previous house that had so many late night incidents and break ins etc but also because I assume its got to be bad. Turns out was two drunken lads for DD17 that I have sent away butu she is not pleased.
OH in bed - he is up for work in four hours so am praying its not woken him, it has however woken DS13 and DS8 which means I will have no sleep at all, between the panic and the dealing with the boys. Grrr!

Oh Kidcat, I'm the same. I had a scary incident not so long ago when a man knocked on my front door around midnight. I didn't open the door, but asked what he wanted through an open window. He said he saw my light on and wanted to use the phone! I of course said no.

It's the same with the phone; hate it ringing late at night.

Hope your boys get back to sleep ok.

(((kidkat)))) those selfish thoughtless little twerps............

I get some bizarre callers at my door, bearing in mind that I have a groundfloor flat in the inner city and don't open my door to people I don't know............

Was woken once circa 2 am by a loud knocking on the door. Thinking it might be a neighbour with a domestic emergency, I got out of bed, stood inside the closed door:

    GQ; "Who is it?"

Strange man with strong southern European accent- henceafter known as SMWSSEA; "I want to come in."

GQ; "I don't know you - go away."

SMWSSEA; "But I want to come in."

GQ; "I don't know you, you're not coming in, b*gger off I'm calling the Police."

(This last go-round went around at least thrice. He sounded a bit like Manuel from Fawlty Towers, but drunk.)

    He went, eventually.

Another time I was woken from deep sleep circa 3 am by loud knocking and went to the inside of the door.

    GQ; Who is it?

A; "The Police- can you open the door please?"

(Put on door chain and peer around it. It is indeed 2 Police officers.) Take door chain off and blink dozily at them with severe case of bedhead and in my jammies.

Police; "Have you seen any paramedics?"

Blinks harder. Have been very deeply asleep. Trying to remember where and when I last saw paramedics and probably appear to be a complete moron. "Errrrrrr......."

Police; "Are you sure you haven't seen any paramedics?"

They appear to be trying to see around me, in case my tiny flat might be harbouring illict EMTs. Since most of the flat is visible from the front door, this isn't difficult to check.

GQ; "I haven't got any paramedics. You can come and look if you like."

They decide that won't be necessary. Never did find out what the heck that was about.............:rotfl:

Add to that stray callers trying to buy dogs (I've never had a dog in my life) and buy drugs (ditto) and the lunacy goes on and on............

Righty, have been up so late because my pooter was doing a Full Scan and all my half a million items are intact, so can now crawl off to my pit.

Sleep tight...............and don't stash paramedics in your homes, the Police will find you out, and then you'll be sorry.:D

Thanks Byatt - who on earth did he want to call I wonder?:D

We had an incident a few years back where someone started hammering at front door (which we never used/opened for security -it was totally isolated, police advised locking and losing key!!) when I went to porch to shout through the door the door started shaking as someone tried to put it in, terrified I got kids up and into my bedroom, put dog in with them and made Dd lock door behind me. All the time on phone to police, you could see the door giving way, and police call handler had me keep on phone so she could record the whole thing - "just in case love!", I stood with fire extinguisher at ready and waited for door to cave. Next thing heard police pull up outside, eventually police knocked - it had been a little old lady using her zimmer frame to hammer at the door:rotfl:
Whilst its funny for us to look back now it was very scary at the time - the door was ruined.

Having lived here almost twelve months I have relaxed alot, no bars or club noise, no drunks at all hours. We only have normal locks on doors, no extra strength locks on my bedroom to secure kids if anything does happen. I just need to relax a little more I suppose.

GQ - thank you, I did laugh.

I remember finding police crawling all over our garden in the early hours once, ( I found out they were police after I threw the first fire extinguisher) and they were looking for a safe and bottles of JD they thought someone had chucked over when escaping a robbery. OH was miffed he had missed the JD!:)

GQ & Kidcat :rotfl::rotfl:Why was the little old lady banging on the door??

I was really spooked and have no idea who he wanted to phone. I couldn't hears him too well because pooch was barking her head off! I live in the country so for anyone to knock at the door it's a rarity, no cold callers or anything...pitch black because there are no street lights. I couldn't believe he thought he would be in with a chance to come in the house!

On things that go bump in the night I have a rather strange tale - we had just moved into this house so 20 years ago and all the children were young. Hubby was down south at some bowls comp. We were all in bed and around midnight woken by banging and crashing coming from downstairs. I was petrified, kids of course woke up and ran into my room. Luckily we had a phone extension in our room so I got kids into my bed and phoned the police. Operator could hardly hear me as I was whispering and the noise from downstairs was awful, as if rogue elephants were crashing about. Dishes were being smashed, windows also, units being torn apart. Police were at ours within minutes and they told me stay up stairs and stay on phone, operator told me they would surround house by climbing over wall into back garden. They could hear the noise but the minute they banged on both front and back door and said police, come out all went silent. They broke down the back door into vestibule there and went into kitchen and found nothing, everything was tidy and not a thing out of place. They let the others in via front door and searched the house including the loft and nothing and not a thing where it shouldn't be or broken.

If the police and the operator had not also heard the noise I would have thought I was going mad, funnily enough our neighbour ( house semi detached) didn't hear anything at all. Children once they realised no-one had broken in and nothing was smashed thought it was a great adventure.

Sending love and hugs to all who need them, I hope the meet-up was enjoyed by all, looking forward to hearing about it

I once answered my door in the middle of the day to a very jumpy young man who asked me if I'd ordered some blow, I explained that it wasn't me.
'Is this 12 Forsythia Way?' He asked
'No' I replied 'This is 12 Menlock Way' 'Forsythia is round the corner'
'Sorry to have bothered you' he said.
Until then I hadn't realised your odinary man in the street could order drugs to be delivered, I'd always assumed that unless you were a rock star, you had to go & get them!
We have beans, peas & tomatoes starting in the greenhouse, lots of potatoes in the tubs & more chitting in the bedroom. We also have lettuce ready to go in the new coldframe hubby built last week.
