Oh blimey, another place I didn't get to before we moved :rotfl:.
I am a bit of a history lover, Time Team is my fave prog. I would love to go to a dig. I used to dig bottles as a kid, down at our local river (on my on, I used to wander for hours and come home black as your hat! Can you imagine that now?) and at some of the big victorian tips on the way out of London. I was an odd child:rotfl:.
A lot of universities do take on volunteers for digs - but if not near your home you have to pay your own digs. Its fun but can be boring when all you are uncovering for days on end is the different earth layers, the excitement I felt when I actually found my first posthole though was worth it( I did a joint BA in Egyptology and Near Eastern Archaeology in early 1990's, although actually did 3 subjects doing Greek History and Archaeology in the first year as well ) never did any digs out there sadly when at Uni but have been to Dion - holiday till I told one of the staff I was a newly qualified archaeologist and got handed a trowel and did a bit of work as well as vist the Mt Olympus range, just Roman mainly. Sadly never found more than pot sherds and beads on the digs but have picked up some nice medieval pottery sherds and clay pipes on a local beach where the land is slowly falling on to the beach of a river and there was once a medieval settlement next to river. Wroxeter is a great Roman site. Thing is I am not a great lover of Romans but Britian sadly is covered in sites so always plenty of work to do for [STRIKE]dogsbodies[/STRIKE] students.
No-one moves faster than an archaeologist who is covering up their work when rain starts to come down, you have spent maybe days digging out a posthole with a teaspoon and brush and you are not going to let rain fill it with mud and maybe lose it.:rotfl::rotfl:Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Wow I love the 'get digging' idea. Especially as it has a double meaning - love of archaeology and digging the garden ready for veggie growing too - which is what OH has just been doing. For once I am grateful that I have had 4 surgeries in a year and am due for another one, as I can't possibly dig
Okay, so those who are incapacitated ( (((hugs))) ) will probably get the black humour. I'd love to be looking after 'my' garden but if I don't laugh I'll cry.
Found out that new neighbour loves gardening too :T I foresee lots of swapping of seeds and produce! As he only has a tiny mobility car and we have a huuuuuuge estate we have offered to go and pick up some wood with him so he can.... well I can't remember what he was doing with it, if I'm honest. But it was gardening relatedI'm glad we can help him out as it's nice to be good neighbours.

We went for a 6.5 mile walk this afternoon along the North Downs Way, very close to Lullingstone Roman Villa in fact, and the weather was just glorious. Lots of stiles though and I thought of GQ " what we lack in bendiness we make up for in cunning". I had to pull my trouser leg to be able to get my foot up high enough to clear the stile. But hey it worked.
However there was a young couple doing the same walk not far behind us and I kept wishing they would overtake us because I have to admit it didn't look elegant. However I realised after a while they were lost and were relying on us to do the mapreadingIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Popped outside to shout the moggies and looked up at the sky. Lovely clear sky with the moon, venus and Jupiter..........really pretty0

I'd be happy as a sandboy scraping away all day, it's one of the few things I can do for hours on end without getting bored.
I know in reality the life of a jobbing archaeologist is no fun - terrible pay, dire accomodation and fairly tedious, but it must be very exciting to find somthing that has been buried for hundreds or thousands of years.
I wanted to be an achaeologist too, and a forensic scientist and a silversmith - how come I spent 35 years in an office? :rotfl:Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
Mrs Chip, I'm relatively close to drawing my pension (despite the government's best efforts to keep putting it out of reach) and I'm still trying to work out what I want to do with my life when I grow up!!It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
