katie - if you have a link to the red cooked pork recipe that would be great please, I have a few packs of whoopsie belly pork that I was pondering over yesterday.
Breast of lamb my mum used to roast but I found it very fatty and it made me ill, I have since used a recipe where it has a wet mix of chopped herbs and such then rolled and cut into thin rounds before cooking, was ages ago and no idea the exacts, but worth a ponder i would have thought.
I'll dig it out and post it tomorrow...it's not online, it's in an ancient recipe book.Evening All
Kate - which butcher is that? We had a walk round Cardi last week and will probably go there to do our shopping in future, much better than H'west. I did notice a nice looking butcher's shop with lots of veg outside - would that be him? Went to a nice bakers too, had a lovely custard tart!
Dewi James is the Butcher Mrs C. He's the one up the other end of the high street - river end. There are several bakers, the one near Dewi James sells an awesome cornish pasty, but I've not tried much else from the bakers in town to be honest, being as how a) I make my own and b) I shouldn't be eating it anyway :rotfl: but sometimes when my breakfast wears off a pasty is just perfectShould have had one this morning, then I'd have been more on the ball in MrT!

Thanks Kate, I'll take a look. We like a good Cornish Pasty - I hope they are not still calling them that though:rotfl:. the custard tart was very good indeed - had a propper wibble iykwim. Queens Bakers - they do a good floury white roll we hope to use on the van.
I'm looking forward to the pork recipe too - got some in the freezer in Wales, it will be something to look forward to.
I was brought up on all the cheap cuts of meat - we always had roast breast of lamb on a Thursday, and I love it. Chump ends were the other thing we had a lot - mum could not afford proper lamb chops, but they were lovely, really good flavour, just a bit of gnawing required!

When I was a child my Mam used to cook some Lamb called 'Lap'. Not sure if that's it's real name or it's 'Geordie' name!Give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temparate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune, and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.”0

Meme - I have never heard of 'lap' so did a quick Google, and it seems that 'Lap of lamb? is the northern name for breast of lamb. And I know that for some reason, some chefs have started calling it 'belly' - even more confusing!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0

Did anyone else do CSE Home Ec? I wasn't "allowed" to do O level with all the brainy girls as we never had enough money to spend on obscure ingrediants or we wouldn't eat offal (& there was no help or understanding from school back then). But I do remember the exam - we had to make a 3 course meal from scratch & clear away afterwards, wash, dry & iron a shirt (were allowed to use a drier but had to handwash shirt) & write answers to questions about keeping to a budget, how best to cook certain cuts of meat & what to consider while decorating a room. All in 2.5 or 3 hours.
All quite useful skills really - us thickies in the CSE class passed (although I don't think you could really fail a CSE) while some of those clever O level girlies left their exam in tears, not having finished... I learned a lot about time management from these lessons (Mrs. Thomas would be horrified if she could see me now). Nothing like my DD's DT lessons - why waste 4 hours on designing a darn pizza box?[/QUOTE]
Hi, yes I did CSE Dom Sci. I only remember the preparing and cooking the meal bit but sure we must have done the rest too. I think I got a grade 2 in it. If I had to iron a shirt that would be why I didn't get the grade one. I'm still hopeless at them now. Hubbie does his own. Not much else gets ironed.
I noticed that the thread was really slow Friday and Saturday and I have missed since Sat night and now there is loads I'm trying to catch up on.
Hugs to all who need them.
I'll go back to catching up.

Im really worried how we are all going to end up with these 'Austerity measures' Some people out there are going to be in a dreadful mess and mostly vulnerable people. I keep on stashing stuff and pinching the pennies to build up our nest egg for emergencies but am worried that the emergencies will be not having money to feed us.
DD got a great bargain at weekend, a voucher for a meal for 2, £19 and a pair of free cinema tickets. So off her and cheffy boyfriend tootled to a slightly tatty pub in the city centre and had a gorgeous meal :T The cinema tickets will come through the post so they get another night out with them. So she tried to book the same for me and OH as a suprise only to find they should have had a 4 course meal, not that they minded as it was very good - result another voucher for the same free as they had made a mistake.
Hugs to all in need, off for an early night as life is a little stressful here due to OH's continuing problems post -operatively. Back at hospital Friday so hope for a resolution to it all.Clearing the junk to travel light

Well wrapping all done (using stripy paper that was reduced as it was Christmas stock) Cake all made ready to be iced tomorrow. I just need to get some sleep now as DH wants to see baby in the morning before he goes to work. That means we will all need to be up at 6am.

Tryingtodobetter I think you have done very well with gift shopping. Kids that age really don't care if you've spent a fortune or a few pennies. I don't really do surveys or anything like that, I find it easier to save money than make it IYSWIM but if you do any crafts have you tried selling online?
Unfortunately I don't think anyone would want to buy anything I make :rotfl: :rotfl: . Although I have been buying a few things from charity shops, jumble sales etc and selling them for a small profit on eBay so maybe I'll just stick to this.
I have been researching some things for the future today which has got me quite excited but also a little anxious as change can always be a bit daunting. I will share more tomorrow as I really need to get to sleep.
