Elizabunny please see your GP. Sneezing can cause problems. I ripped a muscle in my tummy by sneezing after I had my last two babies because I was much older and the muscles were not as strong. I have also heard of people breaking ribs with a sneeze so don't take it lightly, you may well have pulled something in your neck.

Seeing the comments about sneezing reminds me that any time I could feel a sneeze coming on and didn't want to sneeze (in my case, eg because I had just put my mascara on and didn't want it to smudge) then I would just use thumb and forefinger pinching together the top of my nose fast and that would stop the sneeze. That's the topmost fleshy bit (not the bony bridge right at the top nearest the forehead). It's the first bit of "fleshy" part of nose downwards from that.

Just a thought if it's medically inadvisable to sneeze.

Bringing one knee uo to your waist and curling over as you sneeze (or cough) is a good way to protect your back too.
  • Sneezing: Pushing your tongue firmly onto your upper palette also works (I do this if I'm at the theatre or a concert).
    Normal people worry me.

I taught my two youngest to make scrambled egg and how to cook frozen peas on the hob when they were three years old and they still have them as snacks now. They can both cook enough to keep from starving and understand how a cook book works.

We are so H&S concious these days that kids often do not get to do these things although some nurseries do cooking. The ones I have seen seem to concentrate on cakes though.

All my kids did their own washing from age 12 and they put them away much younger than that. Too many parents just think it is quicker to do it themselves and can not see what valuable lessons they can teach.

I can remember a lesson in Dom. Sci. where we were taught that a mum must delegate jobs so she did not get worn out. It suddenly clicked with me why I was always being given jobs to do at home. Maybe that is the sort of thing that needs to be taught as childrearing is a mystery to most with such small families. Older ones in large families used to learn about parenting from watching their own parents with younger siblings and the younger ones from their older sibling when they had kids.

Grandma - my kids all put their washing away, fold up etc, (except DS7 - who I am just starting to get to put his underwear away) and they can all hoover, polish and tidy up. DS7 is a work in progress but even he can wield a hoover for me.

WE have begun to receive post for last owners, bank statements, credit cards, etc today we had car insurance docs, where she has called insurance to change her car over but still not changed the address - even though they will have asked her address when she called - she has chosen to keep this address. I have been calling all the companies concerned and have had the accounts all frozen, and today had the insurance cancelled, but I find it strange that she is choosing to still use our address nearly eight months after moving out? Does anyone have any suggestions why she would do this?

There are plenty of reasons but I can't think of many innocent ones! My thoughts run from full-on fraud, to hiding from a person or company, to wanting to avoid having her name associated with a certain address. I'd be wary. It's good that you've contacted all of these companies and told them. I would open EVERYTHING that comes addressed to her to be on the safe side, and I'd contact everyone that writes your address to let them know she's not there. I know some people think it's illegal to open other people's post - but actually, if it has your address on it and the person concerned does not live there, it's perfectly legal. The Postal Services Act 2000 mentions 'reasonable excuse' and there is legal precedent that that's what this is.

Katieowl:- I think learning how to get several meals out of a chicken is a good idea. Lots of people throw away a carcass which still has meat on it. Finishing up making a soup from the bones gives another meal (try Chicken and Sweetcorn, cheap and easy) Also a workshop on multi use of basics, 101 things to to with Eggs/Potatoes/sausages. People are used to their own limited ideas so new ideas would be welcomed. We all suffer from 'What will I cook today itis!'

Rosanna, Grandma & elizabunny:- lots of sympathy for the neck pain. I am having neck traction at the moment. I trap the eighth nerve which causes a painful knot under my left shoulder followed by pain down my left arm and numbness in my fingers. When bad dizzy as well. Eliza you need to go to Docs now. Nerve damage can become ireversable. Worth having it looked at.

    ^^^ Thanks everyone!:A

I have been feeling so rough with this, although today has been a slightly better day. Must confess I haven't been to see the GP (I know my usual one is away at the moment), but if the pain returns with the same severity or anymore dizzy spells, I know I will have to make an appointment. I think I was hoping for a quick cure:o Bit if a coward when it comes to going to GPs (white coat syndrome:o)

Kidkat thats brilliant that your kids can do those jobs. Even if they weren't perfect at it it is still a help.

I am with scrabbles on opening the mail. I would put a letter in each one and send it back. The last thing you need is anyone turning up demanding money. My ddil had this but she soon put them right.
