  • hi all

Winchelsea I couldn't lurk and run, had to just to say sorry to hear about your loss.I have seen your posts on here over the last year and marvelled at your stoicism-my mum had dementia-look forward to seeing you at the Bristol meet in March. If you fancy a coffee anytime in the month or so before the meet so you know someone pm me and we'll get together.

Hi, I heard a news item last week about the importance of Vit D to all age groups. A breast feeding woman was deficient in it and her baby was also showing signs of first stages of deficiency. Her husband was a doctor too!
I thought it was only pre and post menopausal/menopausal women who had to worry (like me). My excellent GP practice sent me a letter telling me I was low in Vit D so I now take supplements with calcium. It helps with bone density and guards agains osteoporosis (sorry about spelling!).
Glad your bad year is in the past now. Sounds like you went through the mill :)

Thanks Catbells. Yes it was a very bad year, DH got made redundant too, but things are better now. My grandmother has terrible osteoperosis so I had better start taking the tablets again. They taste disgusting which rather puts me off!

3V3 and Winchelsea, hugs to you and strength to get you through these tough times.

Also cant wait to get into the garden and on the allotment. I bought some very cheap onion sets the other day. Too many for me so am sharing them with other fellow gardeners.
Bet any neighbours thought you looked great as a pear tree too.:)

Hardly any neighbours can see into the garden. A bit more in winter when the leaves aren't on the trees, but they must be getting used to our antics by now. They'd have come to collect us and locked us up by now if they didn't just tut to themselves and wonder what the heck the nutters are doing now. I think they must consider us harmless but a big weird.
  • Winchelsea and 3v3 (((((hugs))))) thinking of you both.x

Winter is never a good time, depression + SAD is a lovely mix:( However, this year at work even the most "upbeat" people seem to be struggling. Most of us have had this cough/cold bug that we can't shake off.
Just a glimpse of the sun today would be nice, but don't think that it's very likely - oh well, onwards and upwards as they say, need to top up the gas and elec:eek:

    Just for info:

This year I've tried the heating on all the time very low, because DH gets up at 4.00 a.m. and I get up at 4.30 to 5.00 a.m. and leave for work about 8.15 a.m. DH gets home early afternoon, and I get back after 5.00 p.m., so there is usually lots of messing about with the heating. I thought low constant might be as economical as turning on/off, but I have used loads more gas than I did last year. I'm leaving it until this current spell of cold weather departs, then it is going back to the on/off mode.

If you are thinking of trying it, my advice is don't. It is lovely to have the house constant and not actually freezing all the time, but it hits the bank balance more than I thought it would. I'm still faffing about with the costings, but I won't try this again.
  • thanks for the good wishes. The only thing I find about these boards are that they are addictive.
Very wet day here so won't be going far.
  • Winchelsea and 3v3, gentle ((((hugs)))) to you both.
We didn't have time to sit and count birdies yesterday, but saw quite a few when glancing out the patio windows - so we thought we'd do it today.
Sings softly: "What a difference a day makes".......yesterday was sunny and cold, today is damp, dreary and bl00dy freezing - and not a dicky bird in sight! We'll leave it 'til around 1.00pm and hope to see a flutter of wings then. Topped up all the feeders, de-iced the bird bath and shooed next door's cat away. Then we'll put some mealworms down and sit with the binoculars trained on the garden - and fingers crossed.
I also love the long tailed tits, they come "en masse" (but not today..grrr) and hop around the magnolia tree. Lovely.
    Normal people worry me.
  • Jamanda, we had neighbours who thought ( and presumably still do) we were off the planet and they moved to France about 3 years ago, which we thought was rather an extreme way of making a point. The up side is that the folks now renting thier house are as wacky as we are and we're having a ball. The neighbours onthe other side of thier house have even become very friendly and hub goes fishing with Mr. We just keep doing what seems right to us, nettle patch for the caterpillars etc. and folks are starting to realise we're harmless and even taking up some of our eco way of life - hey, its only taken twenty years but its a start. Keep the faith - stay you!
  • I didn't bother to count the birds in my garden as we never get any, it's such a shame I've had birds everywhere else I've lived. I'm not sure why, maybe it's the abundance of cats, or maybe the Red Kites wheeling overhead. My FIL (who is mad as a box of frogs) claims it's because my house is higher than my fences, yeah right. How many houses have fences higher that their roofs.

Hello all, really hope you don't mind me asking, but is this a good sewing machine? I've been after one for ages but couldn't justify the prices... this seems like a decent model to my untrained eye, but I could be wrong :o
