I'm fairly new to money saving, and am cutting corners wherever I can, so today I almost had a fit when my mam was going to throw away a huge pan of rice (she'd made far too much for her and my dad). I managed to rescue it and take it home.
Right, I thought, I'll make a rice pudding with that for afters. So I did and it was cooling on top of the bench right next OH's tea. Chicken and chips with a space on the plate for some salad. Anyway, in he came from work, zapped it in the microwave and sat down on the sofa next to me and started eating. I took one look at his plate and peed myself laughing. Right where the salad was meant to be was a huge dollop of rice pudding!
From the look on his face, I don't think rice pudding and chips are very tasty!
He ended up with an egg sarnie in the end!0 -
Was going to buy some elastic to rethread a fitted sheet but got sidetracked - never mind I made a NSD instead! Cleared out the salad drawer in the fridge last night & made soup from 1/2 white cabbage, tatty celery & remainder of frozen mixed veg. Turned out tastier than I expected & so filling DH has decided on a 'Carpet Picnic' instead of a cooked tea
Enjoying the tales of 'Furbabies' as mine is a 'rescue' & has DH wrapped round her little paws (me too.

Re children making butter, I'm almost wishing I had some on the premises so I could put them to work. Do they do weeding as well? :rotfl:
Not in my experience, they whinge a lot when taken to allotments and talk to worms.
I can't see any reason why a stick blender wouldn't make butter...the principle is the same. The only thing you might have a problem with would be that if you used the goblet thing that came with it, you couldn't get a whole 600ml of cream in it, so you'd have to do it in two or three hit, but if it's just for you you might not want so much butter in one go?
Or if you did it in a bigger bowl, I'd try and figure out a way to cover it, because when it goes from whipped cream to butter and the buttermilk suddenly 'flows' it tends to splash everywhere! I think it would take a bit longer than it does in a blender, but nothing like as long as doing it by hand. I'd try it if I were you, you have nothing to loose?

Kidcat well done on applying, hopefully the money will bring you some needed financial relaxation ( if that makes sense). I wish when mine were young I had know about these things as they were available but of course no one every told me and this forum didn't exist, and by time I did find out I could have had say DLA for youngest he didn't need it, and as all my children had serious milk and milk product allergies ( I had to write to every company of a product I wanted to use to check no milk as so many don't put in things if there is only a mere pinch, some were good and sent me products or vouchers I must admit if they were totally milk free) it would have certainly stopped us ending up with all the debt as soya and other alternatives were very expensive then and instead we could have done something nice with our inheritance last year. So I would say to anyone apply for everything you are entitled to as you might be managing now but the extra expense adds up over the years. I remember when I had my youngest a young pompass dr told me that if I breast fed for a year this child would not have the allergy - when I told him I had done this with my four children he accused me of topping up with bottles, I never owned any bottles or sterilisers they all went on to feeding cups as soon as they could manage them for water or juice ( just not orange as both boys were hyper even on the smallest amounts and that included fresh).
So I wish all who have are putting in for DLA and carers allowance for their children good luck, and fight if they try to refuse to give it to you. Having a sick child is hard enough without worrying about where the money comes from for their special diets on top.

I recognise where you are Greyqueen and agree with you. My elderly mother who is over ninety had people sleeping in her greenhouse. She was absolutely terrified the police moved them on but she is still very frightened. I thank God have long left the county of my upbringing but am sorry to see what in parts was actually an area of outstanding natural beauty and old style seaside now just a rubbish dump. Ive still never seen a farmer on a bike though!0

.....to hm bread :rotfl:
Tried my half and half today - oh, so delicious with good butter (unfortunately not hm....I, too, am now looking out for reduced cream...suspect the shops are wondering what is going on it's now so popular!).
Mrs Chip, I reduced the sugar again - now down to the 1tbs recommended by you and Lizzy. No detriment to the bread.
So, not only MUCH MORE TASTY, and healthier (or it would be if I didn't eat almost the whole loaf at one sitting), but the ingredients will last longer too :T
Byatt - could your rustling noise not be the bubble wrap being moved by a draft (as you're using it for draft proofing)?
Hugs to those struggling through today. By contrast, I've been full of energy so cooked, baked, houseworked (kitten helped loads....not!) and walked 6 miles. Now eyeing up the loaf again....
No! No! Step away from the loaf!
