Tried my half and half today - oh, so delicious with good butter (unfortunately not hm....I, too, am now looking out for reduced cream...suspect the shops are wondering what is going on it's now so popular!).
Mrs Chip, I reduced the sugar again - now down to the 1tbs recommended by you and Lizzy. No detriment to the bread.
So, not only MUCH MORE TASTY, and healthier (or it would be if I didn't eat almost the whole loaf at one sitting), but the ingredients will last longer too :T
Byatt - could your rustling noise not be the bubble wrap being moved by a draft (as you're using it for draft proofing)?
Hugs to those struggling through today. By contrast, I've been full of energy so cooked, baked, houseworked (kitten helped loads....not!) and walked 6 miles. Now eyeing up the loaf again....
No! No! Step away from the loaf!
xx
I thought of that, then thought no, but you are probably right. It's just it's at a certain time and stops when I put the light on.
I may have a look...could be birds I suppose. Pecking.0 -
TSL, are you and your son supported by the LD team and enabling service? The reason I ask is that these services were very keen to get my dd into independent living and I found once she reached 18, I had no say at all. Well, I did say, but they put me down as an over protective mum. My dd is living alone in a flat and it's a nightmare, because she has said she doesn't want to move and that's it...she has some level of support, about 2,5 hours a week and that's considered good.
Because of my son's late "official" diagnosis, he went straight into adult social and autism services and they dealt with him from the off. With his mental health issues, ds would not cope living independently and he will be remaining at home for the foreseeable future. The longest that we will leave ds on his own is one hour at a time. We were receiving one hour a week respite care but this stopped 6 months ago due to cutbacks.
I am so sorry to hear of your situation, so many people are struggling these days (((hugs))).

Cut backs are happening all over, sadly...hugs back. :A0 -
Just had to share this one - taking on board everyones advice OH and I went out for a meal this evening leaving my parents and DD17 to babysit. Kids were in bed watching TV and settled before we left.
We were gone 90mins total and came home to discover that DS had thrown a tree stand(wrought iron) down the stairs and damaged the wall were dad repaired last week!! But then my parents reported he had gone back to bed and been quiet ever since.
They were so pleased with themselves - you see he will go to bed and sleep before midnight, you just need to be firm. They leave extremely smug - I walk upstairs to discover he has found a stamper set (no idea where from - probably he has been saving it for just such an occassion)
He has then totally covered his door, walls, furniture, tv etc with bright blue buzz lightyear stamps!!! A whole bottle of nail varnish remover later and its still faintly visible and will have to be painted again!! :rotfl:
NOte to self - if leaving him remind DD that when he is quiet he is simply in stealth mode and at his most dangerous - new nickname baby face assassin!! :rotfl:0 -
kidcat I am sorry I should not laugh but it brings back memories of DS when he decided to white wash the upstairs of the house in plimmy whitener he even got the cat!!! At least ours was washable and gave a french shabby chic appeal :rotfl::rotfl:

My eldest decided to graffiti my newly painted bedroom and blame the dog....completely missing the fact he had graffitied his own name onto the wall. Bless them, annoying at the time it happens but funnier in years to come. I think I'd prefer a blue buzz stamp, lol.
Has anyone tried Nigella's ham in coke but used other cuts of pork instead? Not a huge gammon fan and this seems to be the cut that is used the most.0 -
Have not posted for a while, and am catching up on the thread,so thank you everybody for your posts in advance of me reading and clicking 'thanks' button:)
Recently, have taken up knitting again in an effort to'keep calm and carry on' to such an extent that I've a lot of birthday presents for this year sorted out:oAm not a fancy knitter, but am neat,so hopefully they will be well received. At least I find it soothing!
On the OS front, instead of eating the 2 packs of mini M&S gingerbread men I was given,I've varnished them and decorated them with paint, then stuck them onto 2 wreaths I made from tying denim strips onto circled-out wire coathangers for next December.
I really should get out more:D
Was amazed at the price hikes in food so far this month when I went to the recently opened Mr T near where I live! Yet junk food is on special offers-it's much cheaper to fill up on rubbish than decent food especially fruit and veg.I felt awful when I saw the scrum around the reduced section-and this was for stuff that was obviously past its best and reduced by only very little-depressing.
I would love to see some programmes on TV showing how to cook basic, nourishing food frugally.I enjoy watching celeb chefs cook, but find that most of the recipes are beyond the budget of everyday cooking in terms of expense and hassle.I've found that the 'moneysaving' programmes I've come across are low in content of how to actually be frugal-eg the 'home made' series Kirsty Allsop has had are not really aimed at people on limited income,in my opinion.Neither was the channel 4 moneysaving Mrs Moneypenny. If the programme makers had some sensible, non celeb demonstrations of easy recipes using wholesome, cheap ingredients maybe the demand for expensive, processed food would go down and people would benefit in terms of health and money.
Oops-a sort of rant.I think it was because I saw a trolley behind me full of 'ping-ding'.stuff including mashed potato, and a moan about how much food cost.I know it's not for me to judge, but I wonder if public interest in cooking from scratch was made popular by the media if our health and stress levels would improve. We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.Oscar Wilde xxx:A0 -
I have read before GQ that you can shake cream to make butter but haven't tried this method myself. http://www.tacticalintelligence.net/blog/how-to-make-butter-2.htm HTH
It can be done just takes a while, I've done it at school cooking club with some 10 yr olds. they then got to eat the result with some scones I'd made.My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
Morning everyone. so pleased to wake up in a chipper mood this morning. There's nothing worse than your own self pity drivvle getting you down.
Bacon sandwiches for us this morning (Sunday treat) and then I'm flying through the house just making sure everything is tallyho.
DH brought in a shelf for DD's bedroom. I was annoyed because we shouldn't be wasting money on things we can make for cheaper - he then told me it cost £1 from the pound warehouse. Chuffed I was, chuffed. He got himself an extra helping of yorkshire pudding for that!
I'm entering competitions today. I haven't done it before but figured a cheap free thrill wouldn't hurt. Only going to enter ones I would like to win and target the smaller, inconspicuous ones in the hope I have a better chance of winning. Who knows. Something to fill my time in with.
I have left facebook! I am tired of the privacy controls changing and getting more complicated, so I am off. It's weird I feel like I must be on fb to be part of the real world or I might just miss something. Absolute rubbish - who cares if you're having a glass of wine or going to the shopping centre. Nope not for me.0 -
Morning All
Catching up with the thread because this does move ever so quickly!
Kidcat - I know its a wrench realising that you are his carer but that money could make the difference, and dont forget there are also other grants available to YOU for respite care etc once you are in receipt of that allowance. I know a friend of mine gets a grant of a couple of hundred pounds a year on the understanding it has to be spent on herself dso she has a couple of spa days a year. Its not much but sometimes it just stops you from getting lostMust admit though the stamper incident did make me smile this morning!
Trifles - glad its not just me then! I too have noticed the price hike, the other day there was a 17% rise in the price of a bottle of passata!!!! I had noticed other things creeping up but that one was the one that gobsmacked me. Tomato seeds are going in soon because thats what they will be going to make.
It has strengthened my resolve however to grow an awful lot more of my own this year, because with price hikes like this then our cost of living will rocket. My youngest DS has food intolerances and so even if I wanted to I couldnt filll him up on rubbish because he would just become ill, fresh cooked from scratch is the only way to go with him, but it really does irritate me that processed rubbish is always on offer and so is cheaper in the short term to buy than proper food.
Good day yesterday, spent the day helping declutter the stores and found some tutor books for the boys music, which has saved me some money. Today is a baking day, and found some cream reduced down to 19p so am going to make garlic and herb butter. If I toss kale in that then the boys will eat it (tip for you Mardatha!) otherwise they tell me it tastes like soap. Possibly not the healthiest way to cook it but on balance getting the greens down them is better!!
Hugs to all who need them today and enjoy the quiet weather! xxFree/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0
