GQ another way to refresh your drains is bi-carb, salt and vinegar. Mix equal quantities of bi-carb and the salt together and put in plug hole then tip some vinegar down (which fizzes up) leave for a while then pour boiling hot water down. Learnt that from Kim and Aggie! Have used it a few times and it works.:T0

I still don't really get the bicard and vinegar / lemon thing. My basic chemistry knowledge tells me that, as one is an alkali and one an acid, surely they should cancel each other out?I wanna be in the room where it happens0

greyqueen funny you should say this
After I was disconnected from the wonderful Planet MSE yesterday, I went off to scrub-up and perform surgery on the 2 sides of salmon, a Christmas special deal at Mr T, £10 for a kilo. I artfully carved each one into 8 portions, individually bagged them and they are nestled into the freezer. This makes the salmon portions £1.25 each, and they are no smaller than the portions which are £2-£3 even at whoopsied prices.
I like salmon from time to time, lightly-grilled and served with lime juice but I could also do it like Mum in foil parcels in the solid part of the steamer saucepan set. Actually, I might try it minus foil and see what happens. I used to eat a portion of fresh salmon most weeks when I lived near a Morrison's about 6-7 years ago and it was around a £1 for a portion twice the size the ones they sell now. Still, one doesn't need too much protein in one sitting as there are physiological limits on what we can digest and the rest is wasted. A meat or fish portion no bigger than the palm of your hand is apparently the way to go.
Last month in morrisions was looking at salmon tried new bigger store where oddly fishmongers right by front door.
Was compaing prices, weight and deals with hubby and it worked out cheaper to get whole large salmon think it was 11.99 and cut it into portions.
Think I cut int into least 8decent sized fillets but unsure I cut it right as was quite boney.
Any tips?Would like to do same again.
Many thanks prepared at home.

Gailey - how did you cut up your salmon? Did you cut the head, tail and fins off and then slice the rest like you would a loaf? Those portions are called steaks and will have all the bones in. To get fillets you need to fillet the salmon - leave the tail on to grip and slice one side of the salmon off the backbone then turn it onto the other side and slice that off. Then cut the big fillets into portion sized fillets. Your first ones will be raggedy but it gets easier. It's pretty labour intensive.
That's a very basic intro - if you are really interested in doing it look on you tube. Last year after new year I bought 2 big whole fresh salmon from Asda for £8 each reduced from £30. They have to reduce them drastically because they are fresh fish and they don't sell well because customers are afraid to fillet them. I got 12 big portions per fish for 67p each :T and will be looking out for them again this year. If you do this make sure the fish are fresh and not previously frozen or you won't be able to freeze the portions without cooking them. Morrisons is the only supermarket where all the fish is fresh and can be frozen - at least it is as far as I know - all other supermarkets you should check if the fish has been frozen already before buying large amounts.
Blackberry liqueur - :Tthe recipe uses cooked blackberries and sugar which are then strained - the juice is used, not the whole fruit. So to use plums would depend on if you could get enough strong juice out of them which I doubt."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -

I agree but maybe the fizzing that is the cancelling each other out bit is the thing that does the trick?"Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0 -

Most of my recipes are, but sssshhhh! Don't tell the people I'm baking them for :rotfl:
I picked the right time to do my Christmas sweetie cooking, I've felt so queasy the past couple of days I haven't eaten any of it, have a feeling it's a medication side effect, so am waiting to see if it goes away.
Today I think I'll at least make fudge, then think about whatever else I can do in advance. Christmas is the one time of year I'd really love an extra freezer... but there's nowhere one of those could go!
Picked up 2 pieces of good brie and a big bit of blue cheese yesterday reduced with 66% off (they're in the already overstuffed freezer). I have a real obsession at this time of year with turkey, brie and cranberry baguettes. It seems around Christmas the reductions go crazy. I'd really like to pick up a well reduced leg ham at some point.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070
