Jacket spuds and HM chilli with cheese here. Nice and easy as I am knackered. We move our living room furniture around today to fit in some furniture and the bit TV we brought down from London. Both sofas are quite heavy, and the floors underneath were filthy and needed a good clean. I am hobbling about as I seem to have twisted my knee, playing with the new log splitter. This is immense fun (very good for getting frustrations out) but obviously there is a knack in not !!!!!!ing your joints
.
We put or decs up at the same time, but not really feeling very festive. I am worriting over our business probably unnecessary, but can't help it. And it is coming up to a year since mum died, so I think this christmas will be quite subdued.
Byatt - sorry to hear you are so cold, it's not nice I know having spent last winter in a house with no heating, it can be really hard to keep warm. You have had loads of good advice here (as usual!) so hopefully you will be able to keep yourself cosy whatever it's like outside. And really, sometimes it is good to share your worries however independant you are - 'no man is an island' is good advice. Being very independant (aka stubborn!) myself I know that we are sometimes our worst enemies, but also know the relief of being able to share troubles.
GQ - Glad you were able to resolve your footware problem, I had visions of you having to trot about in socks and plastic bags!
The only foreign parts I have ever been to as an adult is Norway, and it was a fabulous place (and people) but horrendously expensive to us. We will go back if we can afford it, but I think we migh have to live on hot-dogs (the only relatively cheap food available!).
Weathermen giving dire warnings of storms this week, batten down the hatches again everyone !Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
Roast chicken, roast potatoes, stuffing balls, carrots & sprouts from the garden.
I've also stripped the carcase to make a pie & then soup.

I'm supposed to be filling in a survey of everything we eat this week for a tenner ( a supplement to my shopping scanning survey) so I thought I 'd go for it a tenner being a tenner, but god knows what they will make of it.
The teen beast hasn't appeared for food at all this weekend before 5pm, OH has had toast both days for breakfast, and chocolate bread for lunch yesterday, and pork pie (on it's own) today. I wasn't here for breakfast or lunch yesterday, but today had cheese and crackers.... My homemade shepherds pie, which is tonights dinner, had to have the ingredients listed, so I put down the usual, mince, onions, carrots etc....but if only they could see the detail :rotfl: Whoopsied mince out of the freezer, tiny tiny microscopically small carrots out of the garden, the leftovers of the batch OH bought in weeks ago, that took an age to peel as they were so tiny, three spring onions that were lurking in the fridge, the remains of a carton of passata the teen beast used to make a sweet and sour in the week, half a mouldering swede went in with the spuds for the top, and I cut the mould off four sides of a piece of hard cheese before grating over the top.... It's being served with some whoopsied pak choi and savoy cabbage, which I'm stir frying...I bought several of the savoys which were reduced to 20p each for the chickens...LOL and now we are sharing with them.
My fake mango chutney turned out OK and so did my Xmas pud, at 1/3 the usual recipe...I only wanted one this year! I've got a few decs up and when I spoke to DD on skype (it's her birthday today) she said she wished she could put some Christmas up, so I told her her dad will pick a tree up when he fetches her from the station next Saturday, and doing the tree can be her job :T Result!

If you go to Oslo you can eat cheaply if you buy food to eat out in the shops in the square where the Parliament buildings are - we went there for our 25th Anniversary but didn't have much spending money and wanted to have a nice meal on our anniversary so we survived the rest of the time making sure we stuffed ourselves at breakfast, and taking with us our yoghurt and fruit served with it, that covered lunch and then just ate at either MacDs or found those shops I mentioned selling reasonably priced things to take out. As weather was good all week ( mid Oct) we ate sitting in square, this way were able to keep our money to go out and about and have our nice meal. We never got to far away from Oslo as could not afford to spend a night anywhere else so not sure what its like for food to far away. One day we do hope to go back and visit more places thereNeed to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Fuddle - Alec Salmond and the SNP are always saying that Scotland should be closer with Norway, as they have the same population and similar terrain and climate as us. I've had Norwegian penpals over here and their standard of livign seems far higher than ours
Maybe because Norway took their North Sea oil revenues and invested it - wonder what happened to ours????:D
Scurries away before a devolution bomb explodes:p
Mind you looking around at the politicians ............. I think I'd invite Salmond to dinner. He seems to be the one positive "heid in the poke" ..... and he'd be pretty MSE as I am sure I'd get away with mince n tatties.

Haven't had time to catch up but for a quick scan, so will just send hugs to those who need them, and a big warm welcome to Byatt:A
Had a lovely day at the Christmas Market at Winchester Cathedral. Very rainy, but saw some fabulous ideas for things I could make, had a yummy hot mulled wine and sweet waffle, and went to say hello to the round table in the Great Hall on the way back. Trying to make an effort to get out of the house and doing/seeing things and not waste weekends slothing about.
Still got a few pressies to get, but think I'll come in at about half the spend of last year. It seems like although we've been in this mess for a couple of years now, this is the first time a lot of my friends/family have realised it's time to cut back on the ridiculous spendathon they usually have. And makes me not the odd one out for once. Did see someone on my FB saying they'd got all their Christmas stuff, so the mortgage/rent would have to wait until next month :eek:0 -

Carefully ignoring the N/S debate that MG has stirred up
... A lonely fishcake from the freezer for supper with cauliflower cheese (2 for £1 at last week's farmer's market) which I have lots left of, so will freeze. (Mardywotsit... You steam the cauli for TEN minutes, no more, cover it in white sauce with cheese in it, then bung it in the oven for 15-20 minutes)
As to what the EU situation will mean, I'm not sure and do have to try to get my head round it next week at work. But personally, I moved all my pension investments out of the Eurozone a few weeks ago....0 -
Oh greenbee, my experience of freezing fishcakes did not turn out well. I got some bargain whoopsied fish cakes from Mr A and when I got them out to defrost they just completely disintergrated. I couldn't pick them out of the packet to move onto the oven tray as they just turned into goo
Now this is going to be a really stupid question, but how do you make eggy bread?? Is it just beat an egg, slop the bread around in it and then grill it?????? It sounds yummy but I have never tried itJust keep swimming!0
