Is it ok to keep the router switched off during the night and in the day when I'm not on the computer? I've been doing this for the past month or so as I'm trying to have no standby lights on when I'm not using the appliances, but I'm not sure if it's the done thing for a router. Thanks.
although the power usage is minimal i think.

several reasons NOT to keep turning routers off without darn good reason:-
1. The power-on and power-off transients do the most damage to the power supply (internal and external), so leaving on causes less wear to the components and circuitry, so better for the router.
2. The DLM that mr.DCMmentioned earlier - BT and some LLU providers use a Dynamic Line Management system (DLM) to monitor and adjust your line's signal-to-noise margin and therefore your broadband speed. Often, it doesn't take much in terms of disconnections for the DLM to think your line's unstable and it ups your snrm, which drops your speed. Turning your router off all the time could inadvertently kick DLM into action
3. when you wake up at stupid o'clock in the morning, and decide to do some surfing to help you get back to sleep, you have to wait for your pc and router to boot up before you can do this (mine are on 24/7 so don't get this problem)
4. A router uses negligible power when on and not in active use, so minimal environmental impact......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I was having trouble with my talktalk router...normally left on continuously...kept having to re start it. talktalk advised me to turn it off EVERY time it wasn't in use. No good for my husband....wi-fi phone user.....consequently, the router is on/off/on/off. Surely this can't be good for it? Also, even if I leave the router on, hibernate the computer then come back to it some time later, I have to re start the router!!!! I don't know what to do for the best! Can anyone advise please?0
