Is knocking on Doors (Canvassing) Legal?

Evening all,
I have a small business (basically, i customise or personalise any item you'd like).
Is it legal for me to knock on Doors (Residential) to advertise my services or do i need some kind of permit?
Thanks for all replies received.

  • It's legal.
  • It may be counterproductive - I would put a leaflet through. I think that many people have had enough of unsolicited callers. It might be dangerous too - many callers work in pairs for this reason.

    I would recommend leaflet/notes too.

I find it irritating people knocking on my door marketing to be honest.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I find it bl00dy irritating having loads of leaflets shoved through my door. Stiil, I know someone with a log burner and a log maker, so they don't go to waste.

Its not a good idea to try it in no cold calling zone,s.
  • I have to be honest, even if I wanted what you were selling, I wouldn't buy from someone who knocked on my door.

There is I am sure certain laws not to call at certain times of the day or ignore cold calling neighbourhoods its also common respect to respect peoples privacy if they ask for people not to call those that dont may quite rightly get a rude welcome

I cannot understand why people here should think there are laws on this. Never heard of a Cold Calling Act set up by Parliament. As for the No-Cold Calling Zones, are these set up by Bye-Law to protect certain streets that the local council think should be protected? Maybe, but are these streets where the vulnerable live? More likely to be residents putting up signs on their own and they have no legal standing. If the signs are on lamp posts or somewhere else on the public highway or pavement and not in private property they are probably breaking the law, because they do not have Planning Permission for them.

I am not for cold calling at all in residential areas. Never have done it. I have done some cold-calling at businesses. Most have welcomed me and I have received business that way.

I don't think cold calling at people's homes is illegal, but I'd be very surprised if it's effective.

Several councils have No Cold Calling Zones.
