smartphone insurance

Hi all

Its upgrade time for me in a few weeks, I'm just going with the free phone on my current contract with 3 (£20 a month, 200 mins, unlimited texts, 1GB data) which is a Samsung Galaxy W.

As I'm getting a smartphone and am tied into a new 24 months contract I want to get insurance. However the 3 insurance at £6.99 a month seems a bit steep.

Are there any other companies that do smartphone insurance independent of phone companies that are cheaper/better? Or should you just go with the insurance provided by the company?

Thanks
Jo

Sorry, what do you mean? Do you mean not take out insurance at all? I wasn't asking whether I should take out insurance, just whether you can get it better/cheaper elsewhere from the mobile provider.

Mobile Phone Insurance - discussion thread.

There is no anything special in an insurance for a smartphone.

  • Check if you're covered under your house insurance or premium bank account?

Yes, if you have a premium bank account, you can register your smartphone and it is insured through that.
There are also several other perks that go with this type of account including travel insurance, roadside car assistance and free (limited) overdraft facilities.

It's worth looking into the benefits offered - if you are already paying £6.50 for your phone insurance you are halfway towards it - if you can then drop your holiday insurance or your car breakdown service, then you're quids-in.

Read the small print before committing of course, some of the terms of the insurances may not match exactly those that you need or that you already enjoy.

I don't have a premium bank account (and don't want one!) and I checked with my contents insurance and it would add £120 to my premium- I think I will just go with 3's cover at £6.99 a month.

I know I could not insure it, and I'm not the person that loses phones, but you just never know and I wouldn't want to have to shell out for a whole new phone or have to put up with a cheap pay as you go for a long part of my 24 month contract if something did happen.

£6.99 a month for 2 years is a lot less than a new smartphone would cost.

Not 'a lot' as the new W costs now £230ish and will cost much less in a year.
Also, I guess you lose phones far less frequently than every two years.

Thats the reason i am thousands of pounds better off not taking out expensive or overpriced warranty and not insuring stuff at a high cost .
But that's down to the individual to decide paying out £168 to cover a £230 phone less excess is not for me .

I would take out the insurance for the first year, that way you are covered if you have a long contract liability and lose your phone.
