Normally I would agree, but OP says they have been really unhelpful & ruined her stay, so in this instance I would keep quiet.

That's why she got the refund, it doesn't give the right to double the refund!

  • You deserve anything and everything you can get from large companies that cannot deal with complaints efficiently and effectively.

I would put the cheque in, not spend it, find a contact for a higher manager or CEO (a few hours researching on google can usually find a contact, or name; then adapt company email address) and tell them about the awful experience and ineffective complaints/refunds procedure. Hopefully they will say keep it, if not ask them to provide necessary bank details, you’ll transfer it back and take further business to another chain.

The reason I don't access any of my accounts on a regular basis is down to the fact that where I work it's just about impossible to get a safe and secure internet connection.

I do know people who live in the UK who only check their accounts monthly or bi-monthly which when you think about it is what most of us used to do before the days of internet banking.

Hmm....I don't know so much about that. I would at least make a passing glance at my statements when I received them in the post. I would scan the big numbers, just to make sure money had come in and gone out. But, nowadays, it can be a couple of months before I look at some statements online now.

I don't check my accounts regularly. I've got so much money there's no point. I could never spend it all!

I know what you mean, life can be so hard sometimes. :D

Fluffnutter's avatar has made me come over all funny and need a lie down ;)

Anyway, what's wrong with simply doing the morally correct thing and letting them know about their mistake?

If this was a small independent hotel, then I might agree, but, it wasn't and the OP's 3experience was not as good as was promised. The hotel could quite easily have afforded to refund more to them, but wanted to be mean and not offer much goodwill. So, in this case, I would not have much trouble in saying, "hard luck,"

  • If you'd overpaid, do you think the hotel would be chasing you to give you a refund?

If yes, chase them to repay the money.
If no, let them do the chasing if they want it back.

    Hence the 35% refund

That doesn't mean the OP can just take more.

I swear you'd say black was white if it was to the benefit of a customer over a business.

  • Got to agree with the poster above.

Just because an organisation or someone has "lots" of something doesn;t mean you have a right to any of it if they make a mistake! that's just greed. How would you feel if someone lost their job over this error? yes, you are £83 better off but now they have no income, comes down to morals I suppose.

And the person who checks his accounts bi monthly like he used to do years ago? come on, I don;t remember Cyber crime being very prevalent in the 80's, money can be accessed and gone within minutes these days by anyone with access to a home computer or mobile phone.

Anyway, keep your cheque, I would probably let them know of their error and then say you will get around to sending a cheque back when you have ordered a new chequebook from the bank and your partner is back from working abroad after christmas when he can co sign it. Say you are very sorry and ask them if they have any other suggestions as to how it can be repaid becuase you can think of no other way and ask them if this is acceptable?

they will probably reply saying keep it and then you can sleep easy.

Lots of "moral" advice here for the OP.

But the OP didn't come here for moral advice, but only to ask about what to do if they "ask for it back"!

If they don't ask for it back, then the moneysaving advice is do nothing!

Obviously you must give the money back if they ask for it. I would say nothing, and keep the money unless they ask you for it, in which case I would refund it without question. Had the hotel been marvelous, then I would have refunded the money in the form of a cheque, no question about it. But they were awful, so I would take the view that it is punishment for their disorganisation and poor hospitality. You can claim you did not notice, or you did not tell each other. I doubt they can prove otherwise. As I say, had this been a nice place to stay, honesty would be the best policy, as I like to see people providing good service, and I have no problem paying for that.

I did once place an order for slide film, and received two identical parcels a month apart. I ordered again, and again I got a duplicate parcel. I wish I had told them because they went out of business. Without receiving duplicates the price was good. I bet lots of people were in the same position as me.
