Can't believe anybody not mechanically minded would buy a second hand car without getting someone who is mechanically minded to give it the once over. Did you even go for a trial run in it? That would surely have alerted you to the major exhaust problems.

in an ideal world yes but not everyone even has someone to take along with them never mind someone who is mechanically minded! our 2nd car turned out to be a total wreck and looking back I wish we had scrapped it at the 1st sign of trouble and cut our losses but you don't know these things at the time

I'm not mechanically-minded, and have no-one around me who is, so if I were buying in a private sale, I'd be arranging for a mechanic to come out with me and check the car over (and I'd be prepared to pay said mechanic to do it) before I bought the car. Yes it might cost me initially, but I'd have some piece of mind that the car wasn't likely to cost me hundreds of pounds in repairs a month after I'd brought it home. Of course there are no guarantees when you buy a car from anyone really.
  • You suspect that he might have pulled a fast one on you.
What would you want done to put it right? e.g. he takes the car back, refunds the sale price, and you shake hands, writing off the £300 spent on repairs as a mistake you paid for?
If so, just go up to him, and say so, man to man.

Otherwise, the current situation seems to be a mess of Chinese whispers rippling through the family, leaving everyone slightly uneasy and you feeling hard done by. Are you happy to live with that?
  • he might have just jacked it up and did whatever without running it after, or putting it on the ramps. So it is possible.

It doesn't exactly help you, but the first rule of buying used cars... NEVER buy from (or sell to) family and friends!!

Hole in frnt is literally 3 inches from where its bolted to back piece so you cant miss it.
  • why didnt you check the car over properly before you parted with the cash?

This is exactly right. Leave the rest of the family out of it and go straight back and voice your concerns. See if you can get some money back at least.

If not then you'll just have to swallow the loss and probably be annoyed whether or not you want to be!
  • What car is it and how much was it? I'm a car novice but will also rather pay for someone to check out my next car when it comes to it.

A 3inch hole, before or after the CAT will be heard. Very loud, unless its a loud boy racer type of car.
