Oil or LPG- help please

Options
I need some help and some opinions please.

My husband and i are in the process of buying a 3 bed detached, which we hop to extend to a 4 bed in the next couple of years. The water and heated is currently via oil- there is no mains gas in the area.

Anyway, the oil tank is leaking and the boiler is older than the mona lisa so we are replacing everything before we move in.

We've had it suggested to us to have LPG using the 47kg bottles which to be honest has completely baffled us.

We are new to all of this, as we currently only have electric so i need some help- i have no idea which to go for as for cost of running i also am clueless, as to how long oil (1,000 ltrs) and the LPG bottles last and cost, etc.

The house currently has an open fire, but we are going to put in a multi fuel stove.

Any help/opinions is much appreciated

  • There is a huge amount in this thread about both...

There are many more options that just LPG or oil but whatever you choose AVOID LPG either in a bulk tank or cylinders.

LPG will cost an extortionate amount to heat your home in cylinders and what from I understand the bulk tanks aren't that much better either. I have known people that have got through 6 bottles of gas in a fortnight when it has been really cold!!
Personally I have no issues with oil (barring paying for it upfront ;) ) As for usage, 1250 litres will see us through for a year (3 bed det with multi fuel burner) I guess one of your major outlays (apart from boiler) could be for a new tank if the old one is close to drain covers/flammable fences etc it may not simply be a case of replacing like for like because regulations are always changing!!

    I would go for oil.

If you get a gas tank you have to buy from the company that install it e.g. BP.

With oil you can ring round local suppliers and find the lowest.

Oil will cost you around 60ppl at the moment so be about £600 to fill.

Last winters cold spell seen us go through a full tank in 2 months however one tank lasted from May to October, just depends how much/long you have it on.

Your chose is between bulk LPG (never bottles) and oil. I went for LPG. I pay 39pence per litre at the moment (cheaper than next doors oil) I do sometime wonder if oil would have been better but over the last 17 years i have paid less than i would have if i had been an oil. It is now mush easier to change LPG suppliers and beat the price down.

Many variables to consider, generally speaking Oil is cheaper to run and is much safer than lpg. Consult the OFTEC site and get some quotes, 3 minimum from recommended installers. Be warned some installers will quote for a cheap system with a boiler that they will make most on and not what most suits the customer.

Your 39p seems extraordinarily cheap compared to most of the poor souls on this board paying between 50p to 90p per litre.

Anyway, that 39p equates to c56p for oil as LPG has less kw's per litre (you should increment the LPG price by 44% for a comparison) so in fact you are paying around the same price as oil at the moment.
