Will I be credit checked when upgrading with O2 at Cfone warehouse?

I'm hoping to upgrade tomorrow at the end of iPhone 4 contract to 4s - and CW have kept one over for me - will I be credit checked for this upgrade as I normally do it in O2 shops and you aren't there.

I was able to upgrade no problem before and in a trust deed but I've always done it in o2.

thanks

Almost certainly. Any new contract will have a check. What rules they apply and if you pass depends on the company.

When you did the O2 upgrade you would have still been checked.

O2 do not credit check when you are upgrading - they've told me that - I've been with them for years and was in a trust deed when I upgraded last june - my only concern is the fact that I'm using Carphone Warehouse instead of o2 - but I'm still with o2.

Any new contract will involve a check, no big business works on trust. They may not check to the same level, may have done it in house rather than using Equifax or Experian but they will have done some checking.

I've heard it's more to do with having your bill up to date etc..which I've always had - if it's the whole experian thing thing I would assume they have to tell me upfront which I can then opt out and go through the usual o2 channel.
  • Carphone do carry out internal checks too along with checks by the network. If you fail the internal check they won't sell anything to you, even if you pass the credit check by the network

They won't/don't need to tell you that they're credit checking you with x or y credit agency. If you have any reason to think that you might fail a credit check with an external agency, then you're probably wiser to either tell CPW from the outset - or go direct to O2 in the first place.
Failing to disclose something to CPW that you suspect will happen (ie fail the credit check) is just wasting everybody's time.
  • Thanks everyone for the advice - I'll see how I get on tomorrow.
  • O2 will be happy to keep you as a customer regardless of your credit history as long as you keep paying your bills so there's no credit check when you're upgrading (but if you're in the process of claiming bankruptcy or similar, upgrade then try and end your contract based on that it'll get classed as fraud and the handset will be barred).
As O2 don't require a credit check when upgrading I doubt CPW will require one, just make it crystal clear you want to upgrade as they have a habit of "accidently" creating new contracts then saying you have to contact your network to move the number over from your existing one, so they get more commision.
As O2 don't require any credit checks for upgrade they wont carry out one as it means there's a chance it'll be declined and they can't process the upgrade and get commision which is all that matters to them.

Thanks again - cW know it's just an upgrade - so fingers crossed.
  • CPW are not on commission so there should be no misselling regarding new contracts. You won't be credit checked but is usually an internal check to rule out fraud. Make sure you take in your debit or credit card for the ID check.
